MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Microbiology or Biology, Food Science or other Natural Science that include 20 credit hours of Microbiology course work and three years of professional microbiological laboratory testing experience; or

A master's degree from an accredited college or university in Microbiology or Biology, Food Science or other Natural Science that include 20 credit hours of Microbiology course work and two years of professional microbiological laboratory testing experience; or

A doctorate from an accredited college or university in Microbiology or Biology, Food Science or other Natural Science that include 20 credit hours of Microbiology course work.

This position performs work using Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

This position performs laboratory food testing.

JOB DUTIES:

Working with administrator, plans, and organizes, using professional expertise, the laboratory’s program for development and modification of analytical methods (including verification and validation) and coordinates activities related to the maintenance of accreditation to International Organization of Standardization (ISO) 17025 standards and a clean, safe, organized, efficient work environment.  Verifies the analytical results generated.

Trains on, and performs as needed, the analysis methods for food testing.  Uses expertise to assist in directing investigative analyses of other scientists in the section.  Works with staff and laboratory quality manager to ensure quality assurance and ultimately, improvement, as required under ISO 17025.  Reviews analytical work for accuracy and completeness, performing technical review as needed.

Makes decisions on work problems.  Plans with administrator on eliminating problems with the section, improving operating practices and procedures, promoting collaborations, team-building, and effectively interacting and coordinating with administrators/supervisors of other sections.

Participates in cross-cutting laboratory issues, especially involving laboratory readiness including continuity of operations planning, emergency preparedness and response, etc., to ensure close working relationship across all sections of the Food Laboratories, as well as external partners, especially Inspections staff.

Maintains personal expertise in analytical procedures, instrument technology, quality assurance and improvement, and management through self-motivation.  Complies with state and department policies and procedures for analysis of foods, and ensures staff is advised on procedures and assures accountability.  Performs other related duties as may be assigned.

  • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in laboratory testing and analysis. 
  • Knowledge of the methods of data collection.

  • Ability to collect, record, and analyze scientific data relating to the biological sciences.
  • Ability to conduct biological analyses using scientific methods and techniques. 
  • Ability to perform quantitative analysis of scientific data.

  • Ability to use laboratory computer applications (email, data processing, spreadsheet, database, word processing) in a networked environment.
