DESCRIPTION

This is work preparing medications under the direction of a pharmacist. May measure, mix, count out, label, and record amounts and dosages of medications. 

Responsible for prepackaging unit dose medications using the guidelines of the Pharmacy Department. Operates, maintains, and repairs Unit Dose Packaging machine. Responsible for the procurement of all drugs used by consumers in conjunction with the State's Psychiatric Indigent Drug Program (IDP).

 Minimum Qualifications:

A high school diploma or its equivalent, and completion of a vocational, military or community college pharmacy technician program or licensed practical nursing program and one year of experience as a pharmacy technician, or two years of experience in providing nursing or direct patient care service of a medical nature in a county health department, hospital or institution, clinic, convalescent home or other medical setting.

College coursework in pharmacy, nursing or other medical related field can substitute at the rate of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours for the required work experience.

EXAMPLES OF WORK  

 Assists pharmacist to prepare and dispense medication.

 Mixes pharmaceutical preparations, fills bottles with prescribed medication and types labels for bottles.

 Processes records of medication and equipment dispensed to patient, computes charges, and enters data in computer.

 Receives and stores incoming supplies and conduct and assist in inventory management control.

 Prepares intravenous (IV) packs, using sterile technique, under supervision of pharmacist.

 Cleans equipment and sterilizes glassware according to prescribed methods.

Process all purchase requisitions for drugs to be distributed through the Indigent drug Program.  Adheres to approved purchasing procedures, uses approved prime vendor and proper procedures for off contract purchases.  Initiates requisitions for carriers for shipment of the dugs to mental health providers throughout the state.  Purchases special drugs for Substance Abuse Program.  Keeps record of purchase orders and receiving. Works closely with financial services to help insure timely payment of invoices.

Input all purchase orders and receiving orders into the State Inventory Management System.  Receives drug ships to insure correctness of items received, expiration dates, and charges.  Maintains appropriate inventory by reviewing drug stocks and placing orders as needed to prevent inadequate supplies as well as over stocking.  Complies reports and inventory data as needed.  Provides inventory reports for providers monthly to keep them current of drug formulary.  Helps in preparing for and performing annual inventory.  Helps to insure proper drug storage  including monitoring of storage room temperature.  Keeps on file, copies of current licenses of each pharmacy shipped to and signature authorizations for drug orders for each provider.
