DESCRIPTION:

This is an OPS Dental Hygienist position with the Florida Department of Health in Desoto County.  The incumbent will provide direct and indirect services in structured and non-structured environments for the dental program under the direction and supervision of the Senior Dentist. The incumbent in this position will only work on Fridays.  The incumbent represents the agency and its mission and values and is expected to promote cooperation, courtesy and teamwork in a diverse environment. 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Licensure as a Florida Registered Dental Hygienist is required. A valid Florida driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.  Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.  Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural. Property Custodian/Delegate: Assigned responsibility for control of department assets.  Required to have access to the information sets designated and knowledge of responsibilities on the attached Position Description Addendum for Information Security & Privacy.  Incumbent must obtain Incident Command System (ICS-100) certification within 60 days and National Incident Management System (IS-700) certification within 90 days of employment. 

 

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • The incumbent will perform duties and delegated tasks  including but are not limited to:  preparing dental reports and records, EHR, supply orders, maintaining sterilization of dental instruments, removing calculus deposits, accretions and stains from exposed surfaces of teeth, performing gingival curettage and root planning, pre-assessing and charting suspected findings of the oral cavity, taking vital signs, recording procedures performed in treatment record, placing, exposing, processing dental digital radiographic film, applying sealants and topical fluorides, polishing clinical crowns and amalgam restorations, instructing patients in oral hygiene care and supervising patient oral hygiene care.
  • Promoting, developing, and conducting community and school-based preventive and educational programs, conducting records reviews, and monitoring infection control program.
  • Incumbent is required to complete not less than 24 hours of continuing professional education in dental subjects, biennially, in programs prescribed or approved by the board or in equivalent programs of continuing education for re-licensure. 
  • Incumbent will participate in DCHD mandatory trainings, staff development days, QI, and other functions as required.
  • Performs all other duties as required.
