This position supports the Dental Program for the Department of Health in Polk County. The Senior Dentist functions under the guidance and leadership of the Health Center Administrator and is supported clinically by a Lead Dentist in the department.

This Senior Dentist will be allocated a ‘home clinic’ but will be required to float to or be reassigned to work at any of the Dental Clinic or partner locations in Polk County. He or she will also be expected to cover selected community Dental Outreach Projects which may include occasional weekend or evening hours of work. 

He/ she assures the accurate and complete delivery of appropriate oral health information as well as the direct provision of dental preventive and restorative services to adult and pediatric patients consistent with current department dental protocols and productivity expectations. He/she also provides, promotes, and evaluates community; school based, and outreach programs for clinical quality and oversees the daily clinical care of the Dental Hygienist as needed.

He or she works in collaboration with the assigned Clinic Supervisor to assure a positive clinical environment is maintained, as well as timely patient flow and quality clinical outcomes.

Clinical Duties:

This individual provides professional dental services to adults and children in a public health environment including but not limited to:

  • Oral diagnosis, treatment planning
  • Oral hygiene instruction and preventative dental services including exams, sealants, fluoride
  • Restorative (including extractions, debridement, and pulpotomies) dental services to child and adult patients.
  • Palliative treatment and referrals as needed
  • Oral surgery including routine extractions, select surgical extractions, and post op follow-up
  • Utilization of topical and local anesthetics, and nitrous oxide as indicated
  • Prescribing pre and post treatment medication as indicated
  • Utilize written and electronic documentation to provide accurate, timely, and complete documentation and complete coding and billing at time of procedure.
  • Maintains expected patient throughput and productivity goals as defined by department.
  • Meets quality standards as measured through quarterly audits and ongoing chart reviews.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding all patient interactions.
  • Receives positive customer feedback in person and through written reviews.
  • Ensures that services are provided in an effective, culturally appropriate, and professional manner.
  • Complies with all Department of Health and Dental security and confidentiality rules and requirements.

Other Duties:

  • Maintains personal vehicle in readiness to travel as necessary to meet operational needs.
  • Maintains and updates skills and knowledge to appropriate professional levels with continuing education courses and educational materials.  Meets all DOH training requirements in required time frame.
  • Follows all department policies related to hours of work, clinical staffing and leave requests.
  • Actively participates in department and dental meetings and program and resource development planning sessions.
  • Responsible for personal and professional compliance with all applicable federal, state, local, and PCHD rules, regulations, protocols, and procedures governing the practice of dentistry and clinical provision of dental care as well as those relating to, but not limited to, work place safety, public health, and confidentiality.
  • Develops a coordinated referral system and collaborates with other medical providers and community organizations within the organization in order to facilitate access to services.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Health Center Administrator or as necessary to achieve organizational goals and program objectives.
  • This position serves a large population of Spanish/Creole speaking clients and employees. May be required to perform interpreter duties, if bilingual.

Knowledge, skills and abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for the position:

  • Knowledge of the terminology, principles and techniques of dentistry
  • Knowledge of dental treatment techniques
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern oral hygiene and periodontal patient care
  • knowledge of dental services in outpatient settings
  • Knowledge and understanding of the cultural characteristics and attitudes of the local community and state.
  • Knowledge of computer software applications including radiographs and documentation systems
  • Recent experience  in using dental instruments and equipment
  • Recent experience  in filling cavities, extracting teeth, performing dental restorative work and treating dental diseases, infections, injuries and malformations of the mouth and teeth on children and adults
  • Ability to perform dental examinations and diagnose dental problems
  • Ability to supervise people in conjunction with the Clinic Supervisor.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments to maintain timely clinic flow
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others 
  • Ability to creatively solve problems through individual and/or programmatic actions

Licensure/registration/certification requirements:

  • Licensure as a Dentist in accordance with Chapter 466, Florida Statutes
  • Current CPR (BLS) certification
  • Nitrous Certification (within six months of date employment begins)
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience working with multi-ethnic children and adults in a dental setting
  • Must have experience providing dental services to a diverse population.
