The duties and responsibilities are those of an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner.  In addition to the practice of professional public health nursing, the incumbent will provide advanced level nursing acts within the context of their respective advanced or specialized nursing practice area.  The incumbent may also perform within the framework of standing protocols which identify the medical acts to be performed and the conditions for their performance. 

Work may be performed in a variety of sites, i.e. office/clinic and community settings and will be performed under the general supervision of the Senior Community Health Nursing Supervisor and reviewed for compliance with program and department policy and procedure. Evening and weekend hours as scheduled per programmatic needs. Duties of this position include:

Direct Patient Care:

Provide comprehensive advanced health nurse practitioner services to designated patients and/or families according to established protocols and operating procedures which may include assessment of health care status and needs, medical diagnosis, initiate treatment, monitor and alter drugs, nursing diagnosis, and nursing treatment, health counseling, guidance, education and follow-up activities.

Participates in and contribute to the planning, development and implementation of community educational activities.

Maintains records and reports documenting care provided and duties performed.  Performs record audits and monitors the quality of care provided by nursing staff. 

Participates in educational, professional community activities that relate to the improvement in job performance and aid in the improvement of patient care.

Additional duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of nursing principles, practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
  • Knowledge of health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Knowledge and understanding of microbiology and pathology of bacteria and viruses.
  • Knowledge of Immunization practices and administration of vaccines to children and adults.
  • Knowledge of case management skills and investigative and interview techniques.
  • Knowledge of Hospital Epidemiology/Infection Control practices
  • Knowledge of all contraceptive methods
  • Knowledge of Sexually Transmitted Infections and management
  • Knowledge of managing abnormal Pap smears
  • Knowledge of current guidelines for pap smears
  • Skills in computer programs and electronic health record.
  • Ability to conduct physical assessments
  • Ability to conduct case management and utilize investigative and interview technique.
  • Ability to participate in the planning and implementing of treatment for patients.
  • Ability to work with patients having a variety of physical, social, or emotional problems.
  • Ability to observe patient’s reactions to medications.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to prioritize work load.
  • Ability to perform nursing skills including, but not limited to, blood draw, vaccine administration, patient assessment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to investigate and report cases of communicable disease, suspected cases, outbreaks or unusual prevalence of communicable disease when required.
  • Ability to assist in the assessment of health status and health care needs, counseling guidance and education of assigned clients.
  • Ability to provide and/or participate in in-service and community education programs relative to communicable disease control.
  • Ability to consult with physicians, hospitals, other county health department staff, and other community groups concerned with communicable disease control and surveillance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Licensure as a Professional Registered Nurse in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statutes and certification as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner pursuant to section 464.012(1), F.S.

Valid driver’s license free of major infractions and access to a reliable automobile to be utilized for work purposes.

Ability to work evenings and weekends as determined by program needs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Trained and proficient in IUD insertion.

Trained and proficient in Colposcopy.

Trained and proficient in Papsmears
