Description of Duties

  • This position serves as a Biological Scientist III for the AHRE Subsection in the Northwest Region of the State of Florida.
  • Identify and assess the aquatic habitat restoration needs of Northwest Florida Rivers, streams, wetlands and lakes.  
  • Develop biologically sound restoration plans which address restoration methodologies, feasibility, cost estimates and ecosystem benefits for supervisor review.  Restoration plans will have an emphasis on Commission Managed Impoundments, Rivers and Streams of the Western Panhandle, and Ephemeral Wetland restoration directed toward T&E species. These efforts will be largely based on Regional Aquatic needs as identified by Freshwater Priority Resources Guide.
  • Responsible for obtaining all necessary state and federal permits required for projects initiated by employee or assigned by supervisor. 
  • Assist in the preparation of FWC annual work plans by developing and submitting AHRE project proposals.  Responsible for contractor oversight on all projects initiated by employee or assigned by supervisor.  Provide project status reports upon request. 
  • Coordinate fish and wildlife concerns with local, state, and federal agencies, with an emphasis on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Department of Defense (Eglin Air Force Base and Hurlburt Field).
  • Coordinate across sectional and divisional lines on aquatic restoration needs.
  • Participate on agency standing teams, issue teams and working groups as directed by supervisor.
  • Serve as a representative on non-agency teams and attend conferences, seminars and workshops to promote the agency and AHRE mission.
  • Conduct site visits to other potential, current, and past restoration projects elsewhere in the state.
  • Conduct routine administrative duties and prepare required documents.
  • Courteously assists Commission constituents to resolve questions or problems they may have in matters relating to the Commission, its programs or fish and wildlife conservation, generally.
  • Seek to garner public support for agency objectives and programs by serving Florida’s citizens in a positive and pro-active manner.
  • Responsible for timely and accurate processing and or approval, as appropriate, of vendor invoices and warrants for payment of goods received or services rendered to avoid automatic interest penalty payments to said vendors.
  • Responsible for adhering to the provisions and requirements of Section 215.422, F.S., related to State Comptroller’s rules and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission invoice processing and warrant distribution procedures.
  • Ability to operate outboard boat and motor and ATV without supervision.

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences and one year of professional biological experience in a field or laboratory program is required.

A Master's degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological sciences is preferred.
