DESCRIPTION

This is specialized nursing work diagnosing and treating acute, episodic, or chronic illness, independently or as part of a healthcare team. May focus on health promotion and disease prevention. May order, perform, or interpret diagnostic tests such as lab work and x rays. May prescribe medication. Must be a registered nurse and have specialized, graduate nursing education.

Some positions in this occupation may be responsible for coordinating work and supervising employees.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Prescribe medication dosages, routes, and frequencies based on patient characteristics such as age and gender.

Order, perform, or interpret the results of diagnostic tests, such as complete blood counts (CBCs), electrocardiograms (EKGs), and radiographs (x-rays).

Analyze and interpret patient histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.

Develop treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care, and professional practice guidelines.

Diagnose or treat acute health care problems such as illnesses, infections, or injuries.

Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost as legally authorized.

Counsel patients about drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with other substances such as food supplements, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, or herbal remedies.

Recommend interventions to modify behavior associated with health risks.

Detect and respond to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults.

Educate patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patients' individual circumstances.

Assists in the development of overall policy and protocols related to the management of nursing care problems and the delivery of client care. 

Supervises the delivery of health services and monitors professional methods and techniques.

Provides consultation and technical assistance in evaluating the appropriateness of client care as it relates to primary care.

Provides leadership in the development and design of health educational materials and training of personnel.

Orders, conducts, interprets, and/or evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient's condition.

Prescribes or recommends drugs or other forms of treatment, such as physical therapy, inhalation therapy, or related therapeutic procedures.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

Certification as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statutes, and in accordance with Rule 64B9, Florida Administrative Code, or certification as a Physician’s Assistant in accordance with Chapter 458, Florida Statutes.

The applicant selected to fill this position shall be required to submit to a pre-employment medical examination.

This position requires lifting, pulling, and squatting.  Duties of this position require the incumbent to be knowledgeable of and utilize the principles of Total Quality Management.

This is a highly responsible position in advanced and expanded professional nursing, providing primary care and performing certain medical acts within protocols established mutually with a medical practitioner and in conformance with specialized certification.  The incumbent in this position identifies health-related problems, plans and implements medical/nursing care to resolve identified problems, screens for potential health problems and engages in the teaching of general health care.

Completes an updated medical history and performs a physical assessment annually on individuals, utilizing assessment techniques, such as inspection, auscultation, palpation and percussion.  Performs physical assessments, including breast, abdominal, pelvic and rectal examination on female individuals on an annual gynecological screening or for evaluation of gynecological problems and referral to the GYN consultant as indicated.

 

Elicits a comprehensive health history, including developmental, activities of daily living, physiological function, and emotional well being on female admissions.  Performs a complete physical examination including gynecological screenings on female admissions, employing techniques of inspection, auscultation, palpation, and percussion.  Identifies medical problems on admission, and pertinent diagnostic tests as needed.  Formulates a problem list and develops a plan of care to promote, maintain and/or restore health.

Completes a review of medical history and medical problems with male admissions.  Completes a physical exam as needed.  Analyzes the data collected to determine health status, develops and implements, with the resident, a plan of care to promote, maintain and/or restore health.

Conducts sick call on assigned dorms, provides accurate diagnoses of medical problems and provides appropriate treatment and follow-up care.  Provides other treatments as needed based on experience and training, such as, but not limited to:  incision and drainage of abscess/cyst, removal of foreign bodies, etc.

Evaluates medical history, physical findings and pertinent laboratory findings of individuals and if appropriate, initiates further diagnostic laboratory testing, consulting the physician as needed.

Monitors and provides treatment for individuals with multiple medical problems, many of which have complicated medical problems, including HIV and Hepatitis C.  Carefully monitors for side effects (some potentially fatal) of medications used to treat these conditions.

Monitors, initiates and alters medication and treatment orders within the established protocol.

Initiates and updates monthly treatment and immunization orders according to Florida State Hospital policy.

Writes monthly medical summaries on designated persons.

Refers individual(s) to other health care professionals and specialty clinics as appropriate for specialized services.  Coordinates the service required to meet the individuals needs for primary health care.

Performs pre-release physical assessments on designated individuals, utilizing assessment techniques such as inspection, auscultation, palpation and percussion. Compiles discharge and/or transfer summaries.

Plans and conducts consumer education in the area of health care and maintenance.  Develops and designs resident educational material for residents.  Develops plans for health promotion for resident population (For example:  Developing a committee within the unit to come up with a plan to deal with the problem of obesity within our resident population).

Provides coverage in the scheduled and unscheduled absences in the Civil physicians.

Performs pre-operative physical assessments and writes up pre-op orders for individuals undergoing various in-patient and out-patient procedures outside of Florida State Hospital.

Prepares petitions for court orders for medical treatments.  Obtains medical emergency treatment orders.

Assists in Critical Case Review Clinic.

Performs related work duties as requires.
