MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in forestry and three years of forestry experience; or

A master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in forestry and two years of forestry experience. 

Experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires possession of a valid Class E Driver License.

Occasional to moderate travel required. Position may respond to emergencies, including natural disasters or other type incidents requiring travel, as needed.

The anticipated hiring salary for this position is $34,501.48 annually.

JOB DUTIES:

This is a technically demanding, professional and administrative position responsible for the annual production of 5-10 million bare root tree seedlings at the Florida Forest Services’ (FFS) Andrews Nursery.

Administers and supervises bare root tree seedling production at Andrews Nursery.  This includes soil preparation and conservation; seed preparation, testing, and stratification; Spring and Fall seeding; application of soil fumigants, fertilizers and pesticides; scouting for pest occurrence and damage; seedling inventory, harvesting, packaging, and loading.  Coordinates seedling delivery to customers.  Coordinates with FFS State Forests in advance of seeding to ensure seedling needs are met.

Supervises the quality and quantity of work of workers in the bare-root operation.  This includes recruitment, training, work schedules, evaluation, and discipline.  Trains employees in methods for performing effective and efficient jobs.  Coordinates daily with the inmate program supervisors to schedule inmate tasks.

Responsible for maintenance of existing equipment and the development/fabrication of new equipment not available on the open market for specific nursery tasks.  Prepares specifications for the purchase of such equipment.  Also responsible for building maintenance and modifications made to any existing structure.    Supervises the installation and maintenance of nursery irrigation systems. 

Maintains records on seed inventories and usage, vehicle and building maintenance, weather data, pesticide applications, Worker Protection Standard compliance, cultural practices applied to seedlings, harvesting/packaging records, and any other data pertinent to seedling production.

Maintains contacts with public governmental leaders, forestry industry personnel, FFS state forest personnel, and other key leaders to ensure input of key issues related to reforestation.  Visits landowner sites around the state where nursery seedlings have been planted for quality control inspections.

Responsible and accountable for managing budget/dollars/resources (staff, vehicles, computers, cell phones, etc.) of any assigned programs in an efficient and accountable manner.  Develops annual budget request.  Makes necessary purchases for bare root nursery and oversees expenditures.  Responsible for ensuring that assigned program areas have operational procedures and processes which result in accountability and compliance with Florida Forest Service and department policies and procedures.

Performs other related work as assigned, which may include the handling of revenue.
