MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma or its equivalent and one (1) year of supervisory experience.

In addition to the above requirements, a person employed in this class must meet the provisions of Chapter 33-3, Department of Corrections Rules and Regulations, prior to independently supervising inmates. These requirements include: (1) background investigation; (2) a minimum of 32 hours orientation training by the Department of Corrections pertaining to inmate supervision; (3) approval from the Department of Corrections for supervision of minimum and medium custody inmates; and (4) shall attend annual refresher training annually thereafter.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Occasional to moderate travel required. Position may respond to emergencies, including natural disasters or other type incidents requiring travel, as needed.

Post-employment – incumbents must pass:

  1. Reasonable suspicion, post-accident, and random drug and alcohol testing provisions in accordance with Title 49 CFR Part 382, Federal Highway Administration Rules, effective January 1, 1995.

The incumbent must obtain a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with a “P” Passenger Transport/Bus Endorsement within three (3) months of appointment.

NOTES:

Successful applicant must pass a background screening as a condition of employment.

The anticipated hiring salary for this position is $24,579.62 annually.

JOB DUTIES:

The incumbent of this position must possess a working knowledge of the forest tree seedling nursery and be able to plan, coordinate and supervise work projects for inmate work crews at the nursery.

Develops plans, work schedules and plans work assignments for inmate work crews.  Coordinates work assignments with overall operations.  Directly supervises inmate work crews and insures inmate work crew quality and quantity.  Responsible for the supervision of, and working with inmate labor crews ranging from 2 to 15 individuals on a daily basis.  Includes transporting inmates to and from local correctional institutions, record keeping of inmate personnel information, (time, on the proper forms), and the filling out of work performance evaluations on individual inmates.

Aids Maintenance Mechanic in construction projects.  Responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of all state sites, maintains fire lanes, roadways and nature trails in the two water management areas in the district.  Responsible for the operation and maintenance of buses, trucks, tractors, forklifts, and other nursery equipment.

Assists nursery supervisor with overall nursery operation including plan implementation, work assignments and other duties as directed.

Willingly performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Successfully completes all training requirements for the Inmate Work Crew Leader position, within the time period designated by immediate supervisor and in accordance with the established training performance standards.
