The duties and responsibilities are those of an advanced public health nursing position assigned to provide advanced, comprehensive public health nursing services in the generalized program.  Utilizing the public health nursing process, the incumbent will be required to independently conduct, coordinate and monitor for quality control and assurance.  Work will be performed under the general supervision of the Nursing supervisor.   “

Direct Public Health Nursing Care:

Provides public health advanced level assessment of health status and health care needs of individuals, families and/or groups of individuals (particularly those with complex and multiple problems and communicble disease) in a variety of settings, including clinics, schools,  in homes, and other public/community facilities as well.

Provides in-depth health teaching, guidance, counseling and advisement that is directed toward the promotion and maintenance of optimal health of individuals, families and groups of individuals. Formulate and initiate comprehensive care management for individuals and/or families served which also includes follow-up.

Direct Field Duties:

Visits individuals and families in their home, public, and/or community environments to assess health status, and to provide advanced level health teaching and guidance.

Serves as liaison between families in need of care and other service agencies in the community.

Provides follow-up activities to ensure continuity of care.

Other Related Duties:

Maintains records and reports, documenting service and care provided as required.  Participate in educational, professional and community activities that relate to professional growth and aid in the improvement in the delivery of client care.  

Protects the security of medical records/EHR is ensure that confidentiality is maintained

Attends all mandatory meetings and Trainings

Reviews/responds to email daily and completes on time all administrative requirements such as EAR’s  and timesheets


  • Knowledge of nursing principles, practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
  • Knowledge of health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Knowledge and understanding of microbiology and pathology of bacteria and viruses.
  • Knowledge of Immunization practices and administration of vaccines to children and adults.
  • Knowledge of case management skills and investigative and interview techniques.
  • Knowledge of Hospital Epidemiology/Infection Control practices.
  • Ability to conduct physical assessments
  • Ability to conduct case management and utilize investigative and interview technique.
  • Ability to participate in the planning and implementing of treatment for patients.
  • Ability to work with patients having a variety of physical, social, or emotional problems.
  • Ability to observe patient’s reactions to medications.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to prioritize work load.
  • Ability to perform nursing skills including, but not limited to, blood draw, vaccine administration, patient assessment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to investigate and report cases of communicable disease, suspected cases, outbreaks or unusual prevalence of communicable disease when required.
  • Ability to assist in the assessment of health status and health care needs, counseling guidance and education of assigned clients.
  • Ability to provide and/or participate in in-service and community education programs relative to communicable disease control.
  • Ability to consult with physicians, hospitals, other county health department staff, and other community groups concerned with communicable disease control and surveillance.


  • Currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statutes.
  • A valid FL driver's license free of major infractions and access to a reliable automobile to be utilized for work purposes.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as determined by program needs.


  • An Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in nursing.
  • A minimum of two years of nursing experience, one of which is in women's or children's health.
  • Proficient in the administration of injectable medications.
  • Experience with electronic medical records.
