This position requires a valid Class “E” driver’s license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Drivers Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:


  1. three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation;
  2. any 2 convictions of reckless driving in the past 3 years;
  3. a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past 3 years; and
  4. a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past 4 years.


Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed.


POSITION DESCRIPTION: Assists with performing routine maintenance and repairs on all types of electrical services, including highway lighting, buildings, rest area facilities, sewage treatment plants, et cetera.  May be required to drive FDOT vehicle and Operates utility van.  Replace light switches, ballasts and fuses and perform other minor electrical work.


Repair and install pipes, commodes, urinals, faucets and all other plumbing hardware in all Departmental facilities. 


Assists with performing a variety of block, brick, concrete and carpentry repairs and constructs new buildings as required. Builds concrete forms, scaffolds and alteration of wood deck on equipment hauling trailers.  Required to drive to field locations to perform work.


Estimates quantities and provides the required purchasing documents for material and equipment. Ensure equipment is kept in good working order.


Installs new furniture and appliances and maintain and repair all existing furniture and appliances.  Performs floor and ceiling repairs, sheetrock repair, painting, staining of woodwork, and wallpaper installation and repair. Required to drive to field locations to perform work.


Performs minimal repairs to heating and air conditioning equipment.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of electricity, plumbing and building construction; Skill to perform repairs adhering to applicable codes; Skill to read blueprints and schematic drawings; Skill to estimate quantities and provide required purchasing documents for materials; Ability to make electrical, plumbing and building repairs.


OTHER JOB RELATED REQUIREMENTS: Due to the nature of this position, incumbent must respond to emergencies. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Correction inmates.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possess a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.  One year of experience as a tradesman in commercial building maintenance and repair is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency. Possession of a valid Class "E" Driver’s License is required at time of hire.
