This is a highly responsible and professional position in a large mental health treatment facility.  The incumbent in this position is expected to maintain a positive and professional attitude and manner at all times.  The incumbent in this position performs duties in the expanded role of professional psychiatric nursing, providing psychiatric care and performing certain medical acts within protocols established mutually with the Medical Executive Director (MED) and in conformance with specialization certification.  The incumbent identifies nursing and mental health related problems, plans and implements nursing care to resolved identified problems, provides management and care of acute and chronic mental health problems, engages in the teaching of general health care, and follows medical ethics and standards in an outcome oriented management system, while maintaining sensitivity to the constitutional rights of patients. Duties include but are not limited to:

Participation in the Multidisciplinary Recovery Team for each resident, working collaboratively to develop and implement treatment plans.  The incumbent identifies nursing and mental health related problems, plans and implements nursing care to resolved identified problems. Completion of a psychiatric evaluation on every resident being admitted, initiating admission orders and developing a preliminary treatment plan.  Evaluates and assesses psychiatric conditions. Takes lead responsibility for prescribing and monitoring the use of psychotropic medications.  Follows medical ethics and standards in an outcome oriented management system, while maintaining sensitivity to the constitutional rights of patients. Works closely with the Clinic Physician, Dentist, and Health Care Coordinators to monitor the general health and dental needs of each resident.  Provides management and care of acute and chronic mental health problems, engages in the teaching of general health care. Completes documentation for the Clinical Record in a timely manner, and works collaboratively to insure that Clinical Summaries meet statutory deadlines for submission to the courts.  Performs intra-facility admissions, discharges, transfer summaries, annual assessments, and treatment teams as needed. Takes responsibility to see that required periodic psychiatric assessments are completed in a timely fashion.  Accepts clinical assignments based on need as directed by the Medical Executive Director. Testifies in court as necessary.  Prepares petitions and clinical summaries for legal actions. Takes call as Medical Officer of the Day (MOD) for one week at least every five weeks.  Will be accessible via telephone during periods working as the MOD.  If the situation indicates, will come to NFETC within 2 hours of notification to address critical issues.  Will work in collaboration with clinical, security, maintenance, Administrator on Duty (AOD), and the Pharmacist on Duty (POD) while acting as MOD to resolve any issues that arise.  Performs other related duties as required.

  1. Knowledge, skills and abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for the position:

    1.  Knowledge of the principles and practices of program management and delivery of mental health services.

    2.  Knowledge of mental health, psychiatric principles, practices and techniques.

    3.  Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.

    4.  Ability to perform complete psychiatric and mental health assessments of patients.

    5.  Ability to manage mental health disorders and care of patients.

    6.  Ability to identify and evaluate illnesses and/or disorders.

    7.  Ability to compile and evaluate mental health assessments, medical histories and other clinical and laboratory data.

    8.  Ability to initiate diagnostic laboratory tests and evaluate the results.

    9.  Ability to prescribe/alter and administer appropriate medications for specific illnesses.

    10. Ability to work with patients having a variety of mental psychiatric disorders and physical problems.

    11. Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.

    12. Ability to apply the consultative process in problem-solving activities.

    13. Ability to communicate effectively.

    14. Ability to develop and implement various program monitoring methodologies and techniques.

     15. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

These physical requirements are considered a term and condition of employment in my current job position:

  • Must be able to travel up 17 stairs and 50 feet in 30 seconds.
  • Must be able to go up and down 17 stairs 8 times in 8 hours.

Must have normal vision and hearing, including use of corrective devices

  • Must be able to work with or around cleaning chemicals and supplies.
  • Must be able to do repetitive movements with arms, hands, neck and head; up to 60 movements in 1 hour.
  • Must be able to demonstrate competency in all areas of training, some of which requires physical activity such as CPR, MANDT and Heimlich training.
  • Must be able to bend, twist, turn, kneel, push and stoop 10 times in one hour, if necessary.
  • Must be able to physically operate all equipment necessary to do job tasks, including using a keyboard for 1 hour.
  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds or drag 150 pounds for 3 feet distance.
  • Must be able to carry up to 15 pounds up 17 stairs in 1 minute.
  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for 1 hour without a break.
  • Must be able to walk 800 feet without stopping in 5 minutes.
  • Must be able to work 16 hour shifts on occasion.
  • Must be able to remain alert for a period of 1 to 16 hours including normal breaks.
  • Must be able to drive an EZ Go or vehicle up to 3 hours at one time if job essential.
