Certification by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a Commercial Pilot (or better) with Airplane/Single Engine-Land and Instrument-Airplane ratings.

Must have logged seven hundred and fifty (750) hours of flight time.

Current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Class 1 or Class 2 Medical Certificate.

Requires possession of a valid Class E driver license.

In accordance with Florida Statute 633, any person employed in this class must:

  • Be a high school graduate or the equivalent, as the term may be determined by the Division of State Fire Marshal of the Department of Financial Services, and at least 18 years of age.
  • Not have been convicted of a misdemeanor relating to the certification or to perjury or false statements, or a felony or a crime punishable by imprisonment of 1 year or more under the law of the United States or any state thereof or under the law of any other country, or dishonorably discharged from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.  “Convicted” means a finding of guilt or the acceptance of a plea of guilty or nolo contendere, in any federal or state court or a court in any other country, without regard to whether a judgment of conviction has been entered by the court having jurisdiction of the case.
  • Submit a fingerprint card to the division with a current processing fee.  The fingerprint card will be forwarded to the Department of Law Enforcement and/or the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
  • Have a good moral character as determined by investigation under procedure established by the division.
  • Be in good physical condition as determined by a medical examination as prescribed by the division.  Such examination may include, but need not be limited to, provisions of the National Fire Protection Association Pamphlet 1582.
  • Be a non-user of tobacco or tobacco products for at least one (1) year immediately preceding application, as evidenced by the sworn affidavit of the applicant.

Occasional to moderate travel required. Position may respond to emergencies, including natural disasters or other type incidents requiring travel, as needed.

The incumbent must live within thirty (30) miles of the assigned headquarters located at 11650 Munson Highway, Milton, Florida, throughout employment in this position.

Florida Statute 633 requires that any person employed in this class obtain a Certificate of Compliance which includes, in addition to the above requirements, satisfactory completion of a fire fighter training program approved by the Florida Forest Service. No employee shall obtain permanent status unless the Certificate is received.

The anticipated hiring salary for this position is $31,344.56 annually.


Provides fire intelligence and directions to fire crews engaged in fire suppression activities. Recognizes those elements that affect fire and potential safety problems and advises ground crews. Flies predetermined routes and areas for the purpose of sorting smokes, detecting fires, detecting insect and disease occurrences, checking best management practices on silvicultural activities, and other flights as assigned. Coordinates with the Center Manager/District Forester and supervisor to establish fire detection routes and patterns to best cover assigned areas of responsibilities. Works with Fire Control Bureau Detection Officer to coordinate tower detection with aerial detection. Works closely with local air traffic control resources for de-confliction with military and civilian aircraft operations while ensuring the missions of the Florida Forest Service are achieved.

Maintains currency in assigned aircraft. Acts as pilot-in-command flying personnel as required. Performs preflight inspections, checks weather, and flies flight plans as appropriate.  Performs post flight duties, such as prepares aircraft discrepancy list, fuels aircraft, insures security of aircraft, closes flight plan, and maintains pilot proficiency. Coordinates center/district aircraft maintenance to include replacing bulbs, lubricating hinges and bearings, exchanging radios (if advised to do so by Aircraft Mechanic Supervisor). Monitors and schedules usage aircraft of the Munson airstrip. Maintains and/or recommends airstrip maintenance activities on the Munson airstrip.

Maps and Records: maintains current up-to-date inventory of unit maps including county, state, and aviation maps and charts; coordinates with forest rangers and duty officers on use of latitude and longitude for fire detection and dispatching fire crews. Maintains center/district’s performance standards in relation to smoke management program and the National Fire Danger Rating System to include responsibilities for training, quality control, and record keeping. Assists in ordering uniforms for employees and tracking uniform accounts.

Provides support and assistance to Operations and Administration section as assigned, which may include participation in the application of prescribed fire and updates to the District Aircraft Operations Plan.
