This is an OPS grant-funded technical position, located in St. Petersburg, which supports Fish and Wildlife Research Institute scientists within the Fishery Dependent Monitoring subsection.  The applicant selected for this position should have an interest in producing landings estimates and responding to data requests pertaining to the recreational fishery programs.  The position will be responsible querying and synthesizing data to be used internally or by partner and third party organizations.  The applicant selected for this position will be needed to communicate with both staff within the Fishery Dependent Monitoring subsection and other staff within the institute and agency.   

 

The job duties are as follows:
• Promptly respond to recreational fisheries data requests;
• Producing landings estimates along with monitoring landings against quotas;
• Collaborate with current staff to create applications to process data requests more efficiently;
• Perform quality control checks on completed data requests to assess data accuracy.

 

Minimum requirements:
• A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and two years of experience in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics; or two years of experience as a Research Assistant - FWC or
• A master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the educational areas listed above can substitute for one year of the required experience or
• A doctorate from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the educational areas listed above can substitute for the required experience.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Proficient with SAS or similar statistical software;
• Experience synthesizing and summarizing data for data requests;
• Experience in querying data from relational database management systems, especially SQL;
• Experience writing transactional queries, stored procedures, and functions within a database management system;
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to articulate technical information to colleagues and prepare technical documentation;
• Strong attention to detail and time management skills

 

Preferred Experience:
• Background in fisheries management;
• Familiarity with fishery indices;
• Quantitative analytical skills;
• Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio;
• Proficient in one or more scripting languages;
• Advanced training or coursework in a related discipline.
• Or having a background or education in computer science, or degree in wildlife or fisheries science or discipline closely related to the duties and responsibilities of this position.
