POSITION DESCRIPTION:  Performs and oversees special assignments involving complex bridge design, review of in-house designs including bridges and miscellaneous structures, research of existing documentation to develop design policies and specifications, and identifies research needs related to structures.

 

Develops, supervises and works with management in the implementation of proposals for new design policies and procedures and is responsible for developing and publishing the Structures Manual on an annual basis.  Coordinates the development and distribution of Structures Bulletins.  Assures the Structures Manual complements the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Bridge Design Specifications.  Coordinates the adoption of AASHTO revisions into Department policies and manuals.

 

Coordinates and oversees the development of construction specifications which are originated in the Structures Office and comments on proposed specification revisions originating outside the office.

 

Supervises employees by communicating with, motivating, training, evaluating, and planning employees' work assignments.  Performs timesheet and leave approvals and other administrative duties.

 

Reviews post-tensioning systems for compliance with the specifications.

 

Supervises Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) staff and coordinates staff assignments to various work activities within the office.  Coordinates the training of CADD staff.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Knowledge of the design and construction of major bridges including steel, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete and post-tensioned concrete;  Knowledge of test methods for bridge components and bridges;  Skill in the design of bridge components;  Ability to manage, supervise, and assign tasks to a diverse group of employees;  Ability to work with individuals or teams to resolve issues;  Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbaly;  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;  Ability to work independently and adapt to work situations and assignments;  Ability to evaluate engineering works and systems for areas of employment;  Ability to supervise people.

 

REQUIRED LICENSURE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION: Registration as a Professional Engineer in accordance with Chapter 471 Florida Statutes.
