POSITION DESCRIPTION:  This position is responsible for production of written materials for the Department of Transportation as well as supervising staff and setting work priorities.  Duties include the following:  Responsible for the prioritizations, editing and coordination of the office’s written materials.  Also prepares and edits the speeches for the Secretary.


Responsible for supervising and coordinating staff in research and disseminating information concerning department operations to print and broadcast media, including:  News releases, feature stores, photography and public service announcements.  Assists news media in obtaining information.  Consults with Central Office managers concerning public information issues.  Gathers data and drafts correspondence on public matters.  Advises Central Office management concerning future impact areas and projects.


Responds to press and public inquires.  Includes serving as the media contact for the Department and giving interviews.  Monitors statewide print and broadcast media for the Department related to coverage and drafts responses, when appropriate.


Coordinates the preparation and dissemination of information to Department employees through a continuous flow of general interest bulletins regarding current transportation or department events, policies and programs, as well as being responsible for the production of Department's statewide newsletter.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Knowledge of the rules of grammar and punctuation. Knowledge of the principles and techniques of public relations, public information, mass communications, journalism, news reporting, editing, advertising or marketing.  Ability to edit and direct the dissemination of information for the media or the public.  Ability to gather material for publication or programs.  Ability to write, edit, lay out and coordinate the production of internal publications.  Ability to write, edit, voice and transmit radio and television information programs.  Ability to research topics and write and edit speeches.  Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques.  Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures;  Ability to supervise people.  Ability to prioritize work load.  Ability to manage and public information and public relations program.  Ability to assess budgetary needs.  Ability to formulate policies and procedures.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.  Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to plan organize and direct public information program activities.
