Position Overview and Responsibilities:
- Environmental Specialist I in the Submerged Lands and Environmental Resource Coordination’s Regulatory Support Section.
- This entry-level professional environmental position supports SLERC with the consistent statewide implementation of the Environmental Resource Program.
- Responsibilities include assisting with data management related to Florida’s Wetland programs, including ERP, self-certifications, delineation training, and rulemaking with a focus on sovereign submerged lands.
- This position supports outreach, user assistance, and the development of training materials and guidance documents related to sovereign submerged lands rules and statutes. Additional responsibilities include assisting with rulemaking efforts—such as public workshops and amendments—and ensuring accurate and timely data entry into agency databases.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to use a personal computer and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to understand and apply applicable regulations, policies and procedures relating to environmental programs.
- Ability to determine work priorities and ensure proper completion of work assignments.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and leadership.
- Ability to interact with customers in a tactful and courteous manner.
- Ability to cross-train into multiple regulatory programs.
- Ability to utilize positive problem-solving techniques.
- Ability to collect, evaluate, analyze and interpret scientific or technical reports and supporting documentation.
- Ability to prepare and review technical reports.
- Ability to meet established performance standards as identified in the district performance standards document.
- Knowledge of the terminology, principles and analytical techniques of the environmental or natural sciences.
- Knowledge of data collection and analysis principles and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Four years of experience or any combination of secondary degree and experience to equal four years.
- Ability to travel
- A valid Florida driver’s license
Position of Special Trust Requirement:
This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP Directive 422, Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility. Successful completion of background screening will be required for this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with the rules and statutes governing the State’s regulatory and proprietary programs.
- Experience with GIS and Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point.
