MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Three (3) years of experience in grounds keeping and/or landscaping.

Requires possession of a valid Driver License.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must obtain restricted-use pesticide license within six (6) months of initial employment, and must maintain licensure thereafter. 

Will be subject to the requirements of the proper use of appropriate respirator and/or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and must pass post-employment physical examinations to determine medical fitness for respirator and/or SCBA use. 

 

JOB DUTIES:

This position assists in the supervision of the bureau’s arboretum, landscaping and grove plantings.

Participates in and directs the implementation of daily work schedule, including planting trees, watering, sprouting, pruning, mowing, disking and other routing citrus tree care. 

Applies and/or supervises the calibration, mixing and application of fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides and soil fumigants as required, including the operation of tractors, spray rigs, herbicide booms and other related machinery or equipment.  Inspects regularly and reports any excess pest or disease problems and consults with supervisors to take corrective action in a timely manner.

Operates and maintains all grove irrigation systems, supervising placement of sprinklers for cold protection.

Maintains schedules for preventive maintenance and makes minor repairs of tractors, sprayers, mowers, disks, pumps, filters, buildings and other grove equipment.  Determines supply needs and implements purchasing of routine supplies, fertilizers, pesticides, tools and other grove needs.  Completes written evaluations for each assigned position as required, reviews work standards/job performance and timesheets of subordinates. 

SEASONALLY:  Supervises extraction and preparation of seed for storage, and keeps records of treatment and seed source identity.  Supervises Other Personal Services labor in harvest of fruit from foundation plantings, recording yields and related date.  Supervises and assists others in placement and refueling operations of cold protection equipment in groves and nurseries.  Participates in horticultural studies with others of the bureau staff.

Performs related work as required.

Responsible and accountable for managing budget/dollars/resources (staff, vehicles, computers, cell phones, etc.) of any assigned programs in an efficient and accountable manner.

Responsible for ensuring that assigned program areas have operational procedures and processes which result in accountability and compliance with division and department policies and procedures.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of citrus production practices.
  • Skill in operation of tractors and grove equipment.
  • Ability to supervise and plan work schedules.
