This medical technologist position consists of conducting laboratory tests that are used to provide information in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • The applicant selected to fill this position shall be required to submit to a pre-employment medical examination. This position requires lifting, pulling, and squatting. Duties of this position require the incumbent to be knowledgeable of and utilize the principles of Total Quality Management.
  • Performs venipunctures on residents/employees. Collect blood specimens per provider's orders using proper phlebotomy techniques following a set schedule or special assignment. Accession specimens and print barcode labels and afix to the blood collection tubes after venipuncture is completed.
  • Daily centrifuge and separate specimens of blood, urine, stool, and microbiology cultures and arrange them for batch processing in-house or sending out to reference labs. Determines specimen requirements for sendouts and prepares specimen for transportation to reference labs.
  • Performs clinical laboratory testing using established clinical procedures (Florida Clinical laboratory Act 10D-41 and federal regulations under CLIA-88 with the highest professional ethics in one or more areas: Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Microbiology, and Serology. All critical results are reported to a provider as soon as possible with documentation. Reports all STAT results to nurse or provider as soon as possible with documentation.
  • Performs proficiency testing as required with at least 90% accuracy
  • Maintains records of expiration dates and checks usefulness of quality control materials and reagents daily and maintains sufficient inventory.
  • Evaluates quality control results seeing that they are within established ranges each day of use with documentation of corrective actions for outliers.
  • Shares ON-CALL assignments with other Medical Technologists determined by the supervisor. Maintains communication with hospital at all times by phone. Responds to phone within 5 minutes and reports to duty for call back within 40 minutes of notification.
  • Answers telephone calls and pages promptly and courteously and speaks clearly and professionally. 
  • Attends and participates in all scheduled meetings and in-services.
  • Other related duties as required or assigned by supervisor.

  • Collects blood for laboratory tests to provide information for diagnostic and treatment decisions.
  • Performs serology, hematology, bacteriology, urinalysis, chemistry, and immunochemistry testing on blood, urine, stool, sputum, nasoparyngeal, and other specimens.
  • Performs venipunctures.
  • Verifies and reports test results.
  • Prepares reagents and calibrators as needed.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on laboratory instrumentation as required.
  • Performs quality control testing for all procedures as required.
  • Performs related work as required.
     

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the principles of biology, chemistry, and hematology.
  • Knowledge of medical technology practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the types of laboratory tests.
  • Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and testing procedures.
  • Knowledge of chemicals and reagents.
  • Knowledge of the significance of laboratory tests.
  • Skill in operating laboratory and scientific instrumentation utilized in conducting tests.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
     

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Licensed in the State of Florida as a Medical Technologist with licensure in all of the following specialties: Clinical Chemistry Technologist, Hematology Technologist, and Serology Technologist
  • Applicant must have Generalist experience in a Clinical Laboratory and be able to work independently.
  • Phlebotomy experience is a plus.

 

WORKING HOURS

  • Training period (6 months or less) 7:00AM – 3:30PM, Monday – Friday
  •  Once trained incumbent will work 3:00PM – 11:30PM, Monday -Friday
  • The applicant must be available to work every other weekend and assigned holidays, dayshift (hours negotiable)
