Job Description
The essential function of the position within the organization is to interpret legal proceedings for non-English speaking or hearing impaired persons to ensure due process. The position is responsible for interpreting the spoken or written word from a source language to a target language, translating court evidence to a target language, testifying as an expert witness regarding accuracy of translated documents or tapes, and collecting statistical data. The position works under direct supervision according to set procedures.

*An individual in this position is responsible for the accurate translation of verbal and written communications from one language to another.  Work may be performed at various branch courts and/or in a courtroom, judge’s chambers, attorney’s office, jail, detention center or hospital.



  • Interprets oral communications from a foreign language to English and vice versa; renders oral interpretation of written text.
  • Appears in court, as required, as an expert witness in order to introduce translations into evidence.
  • Reviews any material translated with any party involved with a case as required.
  • Maintains message content, context and style as much as possible during interpreting services.
  • Certifies translations made by others as to the accuracy of the translation.
  • Reviews translated material as preparation for trial.
  • Interprets for defendants, judges, lawyers, witnesses, social workers, probation officers, investigators, psychologists, state attorneys, and public defenders.
  • Interprets at pretrial conferences, during sworn statements, depositions, interviews, investigations, bond hearings, arraignments, the jail, plea bargains, motions, jury and bench trials, sentencings, probation hearings, domestic violence proceedings, court calendars, polygraph examinations, and landlord/tenant disputes.
  • Assists with miscellaneous tasks such as on-the-job training for interns as directed by supervisor.
  • May be required to work weekends and overtime on a rotation basis.
  • Remains current in reference information resources, such as vocabulary in legal, medical and other areas, different cultural features or local and world events.
  • Complies with all requirements, including continuing education and compliance requirements to remain active as a Certified Court Interpreter by the Court Interpreter Certification and Regulation Program (CICRP).
  • Performs related work as required.

Education and Training Guidelines

Additional relevant experience may substitute for the recommended educational level on a year-for-year basis.  Additional relevant education may substitute for the recommended experience on a year-for-year basis, excluding supervisory experience.


Bachelor’s degree in English, the source language, or a closely related field and two years of court/legal related experience.

Requires valid certificate as a certified court interpreter issued by the Florida State Courts System’s Office of the State Courts Administrator.

*Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License.  Required to be a Certified Court Interpreter by the Court Interpreter Certification and Regulation Program (CICRP) of the Office of the State Courts Administrator (OSCA), Florida State Courts System; Biennial Renewal and Continuing Interpreter Education (CIE) Compliance Requirement.

Makes decisions with moderately serious impact - affects work unit and may affect other units or citizens.

Equipment Usage:
Handles machines, tools, equipment, or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of standard or in selecting appropriate items, such as recording equipment, computer or telephone.

Requires some responsibility for safety of others and/or for occasional enforcement of the standards of public safety.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the specialized vocabulary used in the judicial environment.
  • Knowledge of the types of judicial proceedings including arraignments, plea bargains, motions, and probation violation hearings and sentencing.
  • Ability to translate and interpret fluently from and to different languages (one of the languages must be English). Required language is Creole.  The language may be spoken, written or recorded.  The skill level of the language(s) must include slang, vulgarities and normal idioms.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Skill in the use of dictating machines and video/audio cassette recorders.
  • Computer literate, skill in using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
