Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is an independent professional position which requires technical knowledge in the Environmental Health Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal system (OSTDS) program as part of a team that provides surge support to various county health departments (CHDs). Overnight travel may be required when supporting other counties during short periods of field work.
For assigned counties, reviews assigned OSTDS construction and repair permit materials in the Environmental Health Database (EHD) consistent with rule and DOHM 150-4 Chapter K, and issues permits or communicates missing/inconsistent information as appropriate. Such materials may include private provider inspection reports.
For assigned counties, reviews assigned OSTDS performance-based treatment system applications and advanced treatment unit applications consistent with rule and DOHM 150-4 Chapter K, and issues permits or communicates missing/inconsistent information as appropriate.
For assigned counties, when there is critical need for in-person work, travels to the county to perform fieldwork as directed. This may include conducting surveys and soil profiles, reviewing system specifications to ensure adequate tank and drainfield capacity, evaluating all applicable setbacks, entering data into EHD, and communicating with owners/operators as to the findings.
Participates in DEP-sponsored OSTDS training and remains proficient in code and policy for the program.
As directed by the Office of County Health System, participates in response efforts and exercises for the headquarters county or for other CHDs. This position is subject to deployment to other counties for post storm assessments.
Completes other duties as assigned by the supervisor, or as requested by the headquarters CHD in consultation with the supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Broad knowledge of soils & OSTDS.
- Experience entering data into databases such as EHD.
- Experience in utilizing computers to generate technical reports.
- Experience conducting field investigations regarding septic systems and sanitary nuisance complaints.
- Experience working in a regulatory role or environment, enforcing local ordinances, state statues and/or codes.
- Ability to effectively manage time as part of a team working from different locations.
- Ability to lift a 25-pound object and carry it 50 feet.
- Ability to work outdoors and in all weather conditions.
Qualifications:
- A valid U.S. driver’s license is required
- A bachelor's degree from a U.S. accredited college or university with major coursework in environmental health, environmental science, or a physical or biological science is required. Major coursework is no less than 30 semester hours or 40 quarter hours of class work.
- Certification as a Certified Environmental Health Professional from the Florida Department of Health in OSTDS, or as a Registered Environmental Health Sanitarian, as per section 381.0101, Florida Statutes is required.
- Must be willing and able to work outdoors and lift and carry a 25-pound object for 50 feet.
