RUTH B KIRBY GILCHRIST BLUE SPRINGS STATE PARK

 

This position is responsible for visitor services and maintaining good public relations with all entering Ruth B. Kirby Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park.  The candidate will be required to work independently with minimal supervision providing visitor services, cashier and revenue collection, resource management, administration, maintenance and protection of park facilities and guests.  This position will also be used throughout the park to assist in day-to-day operations as needed. This seasonal position will be needed for 40 hours a week and is funded through September. This position does not have health insurance.

The park contains a collection of natural springs, including a large second-magnitude spring that produces an average of 44 million gallons of water per day. This spring, known as Gilchrist Blue, has outstanding water clarity and discharges water through a shallow spring run about one-quarter mile to the Santa Fe River.

 

The other named springs on-site are Little Blue Spring, Naked Spring, Kiefer Spring and Johnson Spring, which provide scenic vistas and photographic opportunities.

 

The most significant ecological habitats include the spring run stream and floodplain communities. The main spring run is renowned for a diversity of wildlife species, including turtles, fish and invertebrates. Redbreast and spotted sunfish, largemouth bass, bluegill and channel catfish can be observed in waters with unparalleled visibility.

Pay:

$15.00 PER HOUR

 

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Responsible for greeting visitors at the park entrance and providing information pertaining to the park and park activities involving canoe and kayaking, swimming, hiking and picnicking.  Also informing visitors of the park rules and providing directions. 

 

Collecting fees for park entrance and annual passes.  Operate point-of-sale cash register, accurately collect record and reconcile revenue collected.  Complete reports and inventory, operate computers, copies and scanners. Maintain an organized workspace, answer phones and operate radio equipment.

 

VISITOR SERVICES: Explains and interprets natural and cultural resources of the park.  Answers questions provides information about the facilities and services provided for public use, enjoyment and education.  Attempts to resolve visitor complaints while maintaining good public relations.

 

MAINTENANCE: Cleans facilities, restrooms, grounds, parking areas and equipment.

Must be able to use a chain saw, pole saw, trimmers, mowers, tractor, assorted hand and power tools as needed. Strong maintenance skills and abilities are required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Knowledge of:

  • basic arithmetic
  • Microsoft Office programs and basic program troubleshooting

  • operate and maintain various types of lawn maintenance equipment including chainsaws, blowers, standard power and manual tools

  • multi-task and prioritize meeting the needs of multiple visitors at any given time
  • work a rotating schedule

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Valid driver’s license.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in operating point-of-sale systems, computers, software programs, phones, machinery, plumbing and electrical maintenance.
