MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences, environmental health, sanitary science, public health, engineering, or hotel or restaurant management and two (2) years of professional environmental health, food safety or food establishment, hotel or restaurant management experience; or

 

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and three (3) years of professional environmental health, food safety or food establishment, hotel or restaurant management experience; or

 

A master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the educational areas described above and one (1) year of professional environmental health, food safety or food establishment, hotel or restaurant management experience; or

 

Field or laboratory experience in environmental or public health, a physical or natural science, engineering or experience in food establishment, hotel or restaurant management or food safety, hotel or restaurant inspection can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education. 

 

Requires possession of a valid Class E driver license.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Employees appointed to positions involved in food establishment inspections under authority of Chapter 500, Florida Statutes, must pass and maintain the Food and Drug Administration Standardization Program and/or Manufactured Food Certification, and Laws and Rules and Certified Food Manager certifications, as required, as implemented by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services within 12 months of appointment and/or before attaining permanent status in the class.

 

This position has regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of s.112.313, F.S., and Section 60L – 36.003, Florida Career Service Rules and Regulations. 

 

Occasional travel required.

JOB DUTIES:

 

Responsible for implementing training programs, providing inspector and supervisor standardization, and providing training and instruction to inspectors and supervisors in the retail food inspection program.

 

Training:  Implements training programs, coordinates training activity with section managers and supervisors; disseminates information to inspectors and supervisors; evaluates local training needs and assists in developing local training programs; prepares and submits necessary forms and paperwork. Provides support to the State Hemp Program.

 

Standardization:  Maintains precise knowledge of standardization requirements and protocol.  Standardizes new employees and re-standardizes inspectors and supervisors as called upon; and completes and forwards standardization forms as part of continuous training and standardization program.

 

Carries out food store inspections or related food establishment surveillance work as assigned to meet special needs or to supplement inspection work force.  Responsible for attending training sessions and courses as designated.  Provides assistance in an emergency response as directed.  Some tasks will require evening, weekend and/or holiday activity, including overnight and/or extended travel.  Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Industry contact:  Provides industry with training information and training assistance as directed by the bureau.  Reviews sanitation and other inspection requirements with industry as may be directed.  Meets with and discusses inspection activity with interested individuals or citizen groups or with representatives of the media as directed by the department.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Theory and applied knowledge in biological, chemical, physical and environmental factors affecting food safety and related control measures. 
  • Ability to evaluate food processing plant and retail store structures, environment, equipment, methods and controls for compliance with sanitation requirements.
  • Knowledge in specialized food processing including seafood and low acid foods. 
  • Skill in documenting sanitation discrepancies and advising management in corrective action. 
  • Knowledge of food grades and grading criteria and proficiencies in examining and testing foods for compliance including test‑kit and/or equipment usage. 
  • Working knowledge of statutes and rules establishing food requirements. 
  • Ability to exercise professional judgment and manner while conducting inspections and in instituting appropriate enforcement actions. 
  • Ability to accurately and timely prepare reports. 
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
