Your Specific Responsibilities:

The incumbent, a Community Health Nurse employee of the Florida Department of Health in DeSoto County (DOH-DeSoto), represents the agency and its mission and values.  The incumbent is part of the organization and is expected to promote cooperation, couresty and teamwork in a diverse enviroment.  This position is under the direct supervision of the Community Health Nursing Director and assists the medical and nursing staff with patient care and collects data in various healthcare sites. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES; Below is a list of essential duties and responsibilities.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Obtains client’s full medical history and assessment and evaluates information.
  • Counsels and educates clients
  • Provides treatment and education for sexually transmitted diseases when indicated from lab results. 
  • Provides pregnancy testing, counseling and referrals.
  • Assists with medical exams.
  • Administers medication per practitioner orders. 
  • Administers immunizations as applicable.
  • Performs lab work when needed.
  • Maintains exam rooms, laboratory and clinic areas for clinic activities and walk-ins.
  • Ensures that specimen samples are logged correctly and sent to labs.
  • Answers telephone inquiries from clients.
  • Performs monthly pharmaceutical inventory.
  • Assists with ensuring  medication and supplies are ordered and inventoried.
  • Assists with ensuring all emergency medical supplies are available and in working order at all times.
  • Performs medical record audits and clinical/administrative reports accurately, legibly and within appropriate time frames (ie. Family Planning).
  • Completes client referrals and prior authorizations as needed for medications, additional testing and/or further medical care when appropriate.
  • Collaborates with all DOH-DeSoto programs to assure healthy client outcomes.
  • Contacts physician clarification and/or orders regarding client symptoms/standing orders/protocol.
  • Provides nursing support as needed at Outreach/Awareness Activities and incident response events within the community to include mass immunizations, emergency response activities, and community health engagements.  Nursing support may be required outside of normal business hours to accommodate community needs during evening and weekend hours.
  • All Client Service Records (CSR’s) and Employee Activity Records (EARS) will be coded accurately and submitted within stated time frames.  Keeps immediate supervisor informed of nursing problems when appropriate.  Performs other related duties as assigned including requirements to work during or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.  Employee abides by State/Federal laws governing confidential and public information.  This position is classified as a sensitive/confidential position.  Incumbent handles protected health information on a need to know basis following Department of Health, Information Security and Privacy Policy including local operating procedures.
  • Works with health care providers in all clinics.  Maintains records including but not limited to nursing assessment, history, educational sessions, and counseling.  Instructs patients and families on how to carry out physicians’ orders.  This position assists with exams, educates clients regarding health and disease processes.

Qualifications:

Incumbent must hold a current, active Florida Nursing license or a multistate license from another Compact State. Incumbent must have a valid Florida Driver License or the ability to obtain one prior to hire.  Employee must hold CPR certification.
