Your Specific Responsibilities:

The incumbent in this position is an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner working in a County Health Department performing certain medical acts within Protocols established mutually with the Medical Director and in conformance with specialized certification.  Work is performed under direct supervision of a Senior Community Health Nursing Supervisor and indirectly under the Senior Health Center Administrator.



  • This position requires that the provider works at alternate clinic sites depending upon coverage and scheduling needs.  The Monthly Provider Calendar will show where the provider works on a daily basis.
  • Provides Nurse Practitioner services in clinics to family planning, prenatal, and STD clients.
  • Assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation are done utilizing the nursing process and established medical protocols. 
  • Assesses client and family physical, emotional and social needs, provides counseling as needed.
  • Performs physical exams, counseling, recommends medical treatments following established protocols and/or referring to other providers as appropriate. 
  • Obtains and interprets necessary lab procedures.
  • Distinguishes between normal variations and abnormal deviations on assessment and refers client to appropriate sources.
  • Recognizes and manages any abnormal findings as prescribed under medical protocol.
  • Maintains clinic records.
  • Works in an expanded nursing practice role, which includes independent decision making.




  • Serves as a resource person to the nursing staff for any prenatal, family planning, and STD client health concerns.
  • Evaluates program efficiency and effectiveness and recommends changes, which would improve program operation. 
  • Member of ARNP Committee for agency program planning, reviewing protocols, updating procedures and dialogue with the Medical Director and the Director of Nursing.



  • Attend seminars and staff meetings offered by the Polk County Health Department and other agencies.
  • Maintain travel, time and attendance and leave records.
  • Complete computer forms i.e. EAR’s and CSR’s etc.
  • Participate in Patient Flow Analysis and other health department studies.
  • Process phone calls from patients and other agencies.
  • Perform any functions not previously mentioned but may be recommended at any future date by the county health director.
  • Performs other duties as required, including performance of additional interpreter duties, consistent with skill level, and as needed.
  • Other support functions as necessary

Skill in performing uncomplicated surgical procedures.

Ability to administer prescribed medications.

Ability to perform complete physical appraisals of patients.

Ability to identify and evaluate illnesses.

Ability to initiate diagnostic laboratory tests and evaluate the results.

Ability to manage the care of patients.

Ability to work with patients having a variety of physical problems.

Ability to compile and evaluate medical histories and other clinical and laboratory data.

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.       

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.     



Licensure/registration/certification requirements (If applicable, list the appropriate Florida Statute or federal regulation cite):

Licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.27.

Florida Driver’s License is a requirement of this position.

Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.  Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
