The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) plans for and responds to both natural and man-made disasters. These range from floods and hurricanes to incidents involving hazardous materials or nuclear power. FDEM is the liaison between federal, state, and local agencies. FDEM prepares and implements a statewide Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan, routinely conducts extensive exercises to test state and county emergency response capabilities, provides technical assistance to local governments as they prepare emergency plans and procedures, as well as conducts emergency operations trainings for state and local government agencies.
FDEM serves as the lead agency for the State Emergency Response Team (SERT), whose primary goal is the coordination of the state’s efforts during disaster response and recovery. This coordination is conducted within the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) in Tallahassee. Additionally, FDEM manages the State Watch Office; the 24-hour a day operation tasked with providing situational awareness to stakeholders statewide. After a disaster, FDEM conducts damage assessment surveys and advises the Governor of the State of Florida on whether to declare an emergency and seek federal relief funds. Position Overview and Responsibilities:
The Logistics Warehouse Technician ensures all systems are functioning properly at the State Logistics Response Center and the facility is ready for use at a moment’s notice, such as, but not limited to: HVAC units; closed circuit TV system; Direct TV system; alarm system; load and unload trucks and other vehicles, using various forklifts, pallet jacks or motorized pallet jacks. In addition to ensuring all systems are functioning, the following are duties and responsibilities of this position as well:
- Conduct cross-docking operations, inspect received inventory, re-stage as required, rewrap as required using mechanical pallet wrapping, banding and shrink-wrap machines and place products that are palletized in the warehouse.
- Conduct regular inventory of assets, both expendable and non-expendable in the facility and field-based equipment as required. Work in conjunction with the Division contact person responsible for accountable property based in Tallahassee.
- Inspect, maintain, or oversee all facility safety equipment. Call for service or repair as required. Conduct daily, monthly, and quarterly inspections of equipment and systems as required, and work with certified inspectors and companies of equipment to maintain compliance with all policies, laws, and regulations.
- Stage and maintain pre-scripted response kits of equipment and supplies.
- Assist in ensuring that emergency vehicles, generators and other mechanized equipment stored at the facility are always functional and that they receive the proper maintenance when needed in coordination with the Vehicle Maintenance Specialist.
- Maintain State Logistics Response Center schedule calendar and assist using personnel in setting up and breaking down training and meeting rooms for their events. Ensure that areas used are put back in proper order.
- Ensure that the proper building maintenance is performed both inside and out and that all needed cleaning and maintenance supplies are ordered and on hand for use.
- Maintain current list of repair companies under State Contract to ensure that repairs are made in a timely manner.
- Conduct regular inventories of sensitive and non-expendable supplies and equipment stored at the facility.
- Perform duties as assigned during activations of the emergency operation center, work non-traditional hours and travel for extended periods. Employee must be able to deploy to anywhere in Florida or the United States for up to two weeks at a time. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understanding of warehouse operations including inventory management, shipping, receiving, and storage procedures.
- Familiarity with logistics principles and emergency management protocols.
- Knowledge of safety standards and regulations applicable to warehouse environments.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook) and inventory management software.
- Basic understanding of documentation and record-keeping practices related to logistics.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills to handle multiple priorities efficiently.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to coordinate with teams and stakeholders.
- Attention to detail to ensure accuracy in inventory records, shipping documents, and audits.
- Problem-solving skills to identify and resolve logistical issues such as delays or discrepancies.
- Ability to operate warehouse equipment safely and follow established protocols.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced or emergency response environment.
- Willingness to work non-traditional hours and travel as needed for deployments.
- Capability to adapt to changing priorities and work collaboratively within a team.
- Physical ability to perform warehouse duties, including lifting and moving materials if required
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience in warehouse management, with a strong understanding of inventory control, logistics, and space optimization.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Willingness and ability to undergo training and obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license if required for this position.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
- Computer experience, including but not limited to Microsoft Office such as Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and other database/spreadsheet software.
- During declared state emergencies, you may be required to work more than 10 hours per day, weekends, and be deployed in support of disaster response for up to 14 days, if needed.
