The Work You Will Do:
The District One Secretary is part of FDOT Executive Leadership team. The District One Secretary is responsible for leading and implementing the department’s transportation program serving the communities in Southwestern Florida that includes 12 counties (Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, Lee, Manatee, Okeechobee, Polk, Sarasota), nearly 12,000 square miles, and over 600 District staff.
The District’s 2.7 million residents contribute to the 42 million miles traveled daily on its state highways. District One provides capital grant funds to 21 public airports, including 3 international airports and 121 registered private aviation facilities. The district has one deep-water seaport in operation, also a SIS hub, which receives state grant funds from the Seaports and Intermodal programs. District One is served by 5 Railroad Companies (CSX, Evansville Western Railway, Fla Midland, South Central Fla Express, Seminole Gulf Railway).

Your Specific Responsibilities:
The Secretary of the Department of Transportation, pursuant to Chapter 20.23, Florida Statutes, delegates to the District Secretary the primary responsibility for implementing the Department's transportation programs within the designated counties of the State. The District Secretary has the authority to control the resources needed to implement the district's programs and represents the Secretary of Transportation by leading people, effectively communicating and building coalitions, exercising sound business judgment, achieving results and setting the example for the Department values of integrity, respect, excellence and teamwork.
Ensures that the District complies with the laws, rules, policies and procedures which govern its operations.
Oversees the accomplishment of the Department's mission within the District.
Provides leadership and advocacy on regional transportation programs and issues.
Oversees the district's administrative, transportation development and operations functions in the delivery of the District's Work Program.
Serves as a representative of the Department to the general public and to all groups and organizations outside the Department, including Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO's) and Expressway and Transportation Authorities.
Communicates with elected officials to receive input and discuss department and district programs.
Serves on the Department's Executive Team and participates with other top department managers in setting the agency's mission, goals, objectives, policies, procedures and program budgets.
Provides oversight for the activities of the Fort Myers Urban Planning Office (Southwest Area Office) and assists District production and operational efforts in the six-county area (Charlotte, Collier, Desoto, Glades, Hendry, and Lee) through on-site coordination with local governments and organizations. Develops the 5-year Transportation Plan for the southern six counties of District One. Provides policy, direction, local government coordination and planning for those counties as well as technical assistance to the area MPO's.

Licensure/Registration/Certification Requirements:
- Pursuant to Chapter 20.23, F.S., this position requires registration as a Professional Engineer according to Chapter 471, F.S., or an advanced degree in an appropriate related discipline.
Other Job-Related Requirements:
- Due to the nature of this position, incumbent must respond to emergencies. This position also requires a valid Class E driver's license. This position requires a level II background check. Employee will be required to be responsive to emergency situations within a very short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team
