The Work You Will Do:
Materials Coordinator- Geotech Const/District One- District Materials Office
The Materials Coordinator – Geotech Construction ensures the quality and compliance of geotechnical materials in FDOT projects, with a focus on foundations such as drilled shafts, driven piles and auger cast piles. Responsibilities include reviewing plans and specifications, inspecting construction activities, and analyzing soil and foundation conditions to determine proper installation techniques and verify that foundations meet design and contract requirements. The role also involves providing technical guidance and training, overseeing consultant work, recommending process improvements, and maintaining required CTQP certifications for pile driving, drilled shaft and auger cast piles inspection. This position combines fieldwork, data analysis, and stakeholder coordination to support safe, durable, and efficient transportation infrastructure.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
Review Quality Control plans, Construction plans, specifications, procedures and any other documents necessary to execute the Department’s mission. Provide clear comments as requested in time to be useful to the customer. Offer solutions when objecting to the approach that is proposed.
Perform Independent Assurance evaluations in the field as described in Department procedures and the Federal Aid Policy Guide. Perform these evaluations in an objective and professional manner. Document and report findings.
Perform field and/or laboratory testing in the field in accordance with the applicable Florida Sampling and Testing Methods (FSTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) or American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) test method. Report results precisely in the appropriate database. Keep all testing equipment calibrated and in good working order. Analyze materials data for contract and procedural compliance. Take timely action to correct any errors in the data. Actively facilitate the notification of stakeholders of errors, failures or negative trends.
Inspect materials in the field as requested or required during Construction, Maintenance or Design. Determine material compliance with Department contract and procedural documents. Inspect ongoing activities and documentation of materials related testing and inspection. Provide feedback and technical assistance to field personnel as appropriate. Document and report findings.
Evaluate project/process to determine current performance status. Make/recommend improvements to optimize delivery or improve results. Notify stakeholders of any changes to the project/process. Ensure project/process is consistent, predictable and repeatable.
Perform analysis required to determine the best approach to Department soil and foundation needs. Perform analysis required to determine the appropriate foundation installation technique and parameters. Perform analysis required to determine if the installed foundation meets the design requirements. Design foundations and other geotechnical solutions to support Department infrastructure.
Provide materials related technical support to customers as requested. Provide support in time to meet the customer’s needs. Provide guidance and training to customers.
Support consultant contracts in accordance with applicable rules, laws and procedures. Review the consultant work effort. Review and comment on invoices.
The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- The concepts, terminology, principles and analytical techniques of geotechnical engineering.
- Engineering design, construction, production and/or operations.
Skills in:
- Using engineering tools, equipment and/or instruments.
Ability to:
- Operate a personal computer for word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
- Analyze and interpret engineering data.
- Solve problems relating to engineering.
- Perform engineering inspections.
- Apply engineering quantitative techniques.
- Plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
- Communicate engineering information effectively.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Pick up to 50 pounds and move around uneven terrain without assistance.
Other Job-Related Requirements:
Must possess or obtain and maintain Pile Driving Inspector Construction Training Qualification Program (CTQP) and Drilled Shaft Inspector Construction Training Qualification Program (CTQP). Must pass or have passed the Construction Math and Contract Plans Reading Self Study examinations. Employee will be required to be responsive to emergency situations within a very short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team (TEMT). A valid Class E Driver’s License is required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience using engineering or manufacturing tools, equipment and/or instruments.
- Prior experience operating a personal computer for word processing, spreadsheet, and/or database applications.
- Prior experience with evaluating construction materials.
This position requires a valid Class (E) driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:
- Three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation.
- Any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years.
- A suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years.
- A suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.
