Bahia Honda State Park is looking for a self-motivated park service professional to fill a Park Services Specialist position, providing visitor services, maintenance, protection, administration, and resource management.  The applicant must possess good visitor service and administrative skills, be able to work independently and have the ability to perform a variety of skilled trade functions using assorted equipment and tools.  The applicant must be able to work rotating shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Pay:

Base salary $3.003.00 plus $95.33 Competitive Area Differential monthly/$36,036.00 annually

 

Your Specific Responsibilities:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Compliance with the processing requirements of Chapter 215.422, F.S. is mandatory. Persistent failure to comply with this section by any agency of the state shall constitute good cause for discharge of employees duly found responsible, or predominantly responsible, for failure to comply.

 

VISITOR SERVICES

Plan, research, coordinate, write and conduct environmental education programs, including program design, scheduling and publicity.  Coordinate and work with park staff to develop new interpretive programs.  Provide staff training in environmental education.  Participate in public speaking engagements.  Oversee and participate in the planning and coordination of special programs and events.  Develop and maintain park interpretive displays and kiosks, coordinate staffing and operations of the nature center.

 

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Participate in planning and conducting resource management activities including bird nesting, exotic plant control, park nursery and erosion control.  Administer the parks sea turtle nesting program to include identification, monitoring, evaluation and reporting of turtle nests.  Schedule and train staff on proper procedure and reports required.  Research the cultural and natural resource history of the park to enhance interpretive programming.  Collect and maintain cultural resource files, artifact inventories, and coordinate and participate in appropriate preservation of cultural and natural resources.  Participate in non-native wildlife removal.

 

MAINTENANCE

Maintain cleanliness of interpretive exhibits, displays, facilities and equipment.

 

ADMINISTRATION

Oversee the day-to-day operation of the Nature Center facility, personnel and its programs.  Prepare reports as necessary, including visitor use, visitor contacts, and interpretive programs.  Schedules and tracks all school programs and other interpretive programs within the park and off-premises.  Coordinate various park brochure needs.  Administer the public information program of the park, including press releases and newsletters. Assist Park Manager with a comprehensive volunteer program of campground hosts, seasonal and local volunteers.   

 

PROTECTION

Ensure park rules are enforced pertaining to all natural and cultural facilities and resources and the use thereof for the enjoyment of the visitor.  Ensure park interpretive facilities, displays, exhibits and equipment utilized are free of safety hazards.  Act as Staff in charge when needed by management.

 

May volunteer to snorkel.

 

Perform related work as required.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • use of scanner, point-of-sale software, fax machines and other standard office equipment
  • ecosystem and resource management functions and techniques
  • cultural resource protection and restoration
  • principles of teaching and training

 

SKILL IN:

  • digital photography
  • use of computers, with preference toward WORD, Excel, MS Publisher, PowerPoint and other graphic programs
  • supervisory management

 

ABILITY TO:

  • successfully complete background and fingerprint check
  • successfully complete ranger academy
  • design, organize, schedule and create a variety of interpretive programs
  • schedule school groups and organize and plan special events
  • prepare and conduct educational programs
  • research and write articles, educational promotional and interpretive materials
  • prepare and keep records
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, volunteers, other agencies and the public
  • work rotating shifts including nights, holidays and weekends
  • maintain a valid driver license

 

Other Job Related Requirements for this position: 

  • Valid driver license
  • Successfully complete ranger academy
  • Must have prior approval and pass DEP approved training course to snorkel
