The incumbent, an employee of the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County, represents the agency and its mission and values.  The incumbent is part of the global public health organization and is expected to promote cooperation, courtesy, and teamwork, in a diverse environment.

The incumbent in this position functions under the supervision of a Community Health Nursing Supervisor; Occupies a ten-month Career Service position and operates in accordance with the academic calendar.  The incumbent must possess a current RN license in the State of Florida.

School Health Program Orientation and Annual Training – In coordination with school district programmatic partners and under the oversight of the Community Health Nursing Supervisor, develops and implements a comprehensive orientation and ongoing annual education program for School Health services staff.  Program to address basic competencies in the School Health Service program, as outlined in School Health Services Plan and including, but not limited to: standardized training and competency demonstration for required Health Screenings, including vision, hearing, scoliosis and growth and development; medication administration training; field trip training; the development, implementation and monitoring of nursing care plans; standardized referral and follow -up procedures for identified health conditions; record review procedures; CPR and emergency procedures in the school health setting.  Program must also address health information security: All information held in health records is confidential, with access governed by state and federal laws.  Confidential information includes the client’s name, address, medical, social and financial data and services received.  Sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy information is of a more sensitive nature and is to be maintained by the school nurse in a separate confidential file inaccessible to other staff.  This employee will adhere to all regulations re: confidentiality of client’s personal and medical information. Maintains records of all staff training.

Development and Implementation of Specialized Nursing Education Programs in the School Setting – Develops and presents lessons to individuals and groups in the school and community setting in topics including but not limited to asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, and life-threatening allergies.  Serves as program champion for implementation of Asthma Friendly School designation in district schools, including guiding program application and process in individual schools.  Develop and implement standardized education programs for care of the diabetic student in the school setting; within the parameters of the public health setting, develops relationships with insulin, technology representatives, and advocacy groups to facilitate diabetes training and support to school health program staff.  In accordance with Florida Administrative Code, develop and implement standardized education program for care of students with epilepsy and care of students with life-threatening allergies.

 

Nursing Mentorship - Assist Director of Nursing and Community Health Nursing Supervisor in the implementation of nursing practice at DOH Manatee. Acts as a preceptor for students from local schools of nursing assigned to affiliate with the Health Department in the School Health Services Program.  Participates in the mentoring of staff and students; Identifies, plans, and develops resources to augment program operations; provides technical assistance and serves as the liaison with community organizations. Holds a leadership role on the School Health Total Quality Improvement Group in partnership with school district programmatic counterparts. Serves on committees and attends meetings related to matters of concern as required.  Attends and participates in staff development such as staff meetings and in-service/continuing education. Participates with other staff in developing solutions to operational problems.  Assists in the coordination of activities with other entities within department and community agencies. Attends all mandatory trainings and meetings as required by the position.

Licensure/registration/certification requirements (If applicable, list the appropriate Florida Statute or federal regulation cite):  

  • Valid Florida RN License
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License and reliable transportation
  • CPR Certification or willing to obtain within 30 days of hirre
  • 3-5 years of current School Health nursing experience, including the development and provision of health education sessions to individuals and groups
  • Bachelors degree preferred

Emergency Duty: Incumbent may be required to work during or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in a special needs or Red Cross shelters, or perform other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, manmade or natural.
