MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in Forestry or a related field from a Society of American Foresters accredited college or university; or

Anticipated receipt of a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in Forestry or a related field from a Society of American Foresters accredited college or university within six (6) months of the closing date of this advertisement.  NOTE: Applicants in this category will not be appointed until they have acquired and provide final proof of receiving the required degree. 

A bachelor’s and/or master’s degrees in Forestry or a related field obtained outside the United States must either: 1) be obtained from a Society of American Foresters accredited college or university; or 2) curriculum must include at least two (2) of the following four (4) courses: Silviculture, Dendrology, Forest Mensuration or Forest Management.  NOTE: Applicants will provide an academic equivalency evaluation obtained in the United States showing the required courses.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Occasional to moderate travel required. Position may respond to emergencies, including natural disasters or other type incidents requiring travel, as needed.

The anticipated hiring salary for this position is $36,287.68 annually.

JOB DUTIES:

This is a technical position demanding a high degree of forestry background. This individual should exhibit skills in self-motivation and the ability to communicate with the public, as well as, Florida Forest Service personnel. 

Responsible for assisting the Forestry Supervisor II in charge of forest management in the development of long and short-term forest management plans relating to the timber program on assigned areas of the Withlacoochee State Forest, including the Five Year Management Plan, as well as, two-year cutting budgets and annual prescribed burning plans. Oversees reforestation/restoration projects, timber sales, herbicide applications and assists in the development and implementation of the environmental analysis forms. Responsible for assisting in the daily coordination of the work activities of Park Rangers, Foresters and others who are assigned to mark designated timber and/or assist in reforestation/restoration projects. This position may be required to perform Forest Inventory Analysis (FIA) work, including FIA Certification by the United States Forest Service and the gathering and recording of FIA plot data in the field.

Performs computer operations for determination of timber cruising and marking statistics. Assists in surveying and establishing new boundary lines and maintaining previously established boundary lines. Performs stand description mapping and continuous forestry inventory. Assists in the detection and treatment of insect and disease attacks on the forest. Maintains records of all assigned projects including timber harvesting, reforestation/restoration, herbicide operations, etc., to assure compliance with contract requirements.

Provides wildfire and emergency response support as directed. Assists in the development of smoke management, wildfire prevention, prescribed fire, pre-suppression burning plans and hazardous fuels mitigation. Assists in the enforcement of Florida’s open burning laws and regulation. 

Responsible for the care and maintenance of assigned vehicles, tools and equipment (e.g., Data Recorders, Global Positioning System Units). Maintains an inventory of supplies needed to accomplish assignments.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
