Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.
Florida State Hospital (FSH) is a mental health treatment facility owned and operated by the State of Florida and is part of the Department of Children and Families. The department’s mission is to “work in partnership with local communities to protect the vulnerable, promote strong and economically self-sufficient families, and advance personal and family recovery and resiliency.”

This is a highly responsible and professional position serving as the Barber/Beautician II within Civil Services. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative team player who works seamlessly across all sections within the program office. This role requires the use of independent judgment, a proactive approach to responsibilities, and exceptional attention to detail. Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Performs skilled barber and beautician work, including trimming beards and mustaches, scalp and hair treatments, shampoos, cutting and styling hair, shaving residents and other beauty/barber treatments.
- Supervises and instructs residents in grooming skills such as: shaving, shampooing, combing hair, scalp/dandruff treatments.
- Sterilizes tools and equipment; keeps shop clean and orderly, and in a sanitary condition.
- Maintains records of supply inventory, equipment and laundry supplies. Requisitions supplies and equipment for a barber and beauty shop.
- Implements Service Team recommendations and consults with Service Team regarding specific resident needs.
- Mix shampoo and other solutions for use as needed to provide services to residents.
- Keep daily records of services provided to residents and submit record to MUS daily, and maintain weekly schedule of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
- Performs related work as necessary.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position:
- Knowledge of haircutting, styling and trimming techniques.
- Knowledge of hair shampooing, conditioning and tinting techniques.
- Knowledge of barbering and/or cosmetology supplies and equipment.
- Skill in using shears, clippers and other hair-styling tools.
- Ability to cut, style, shampoo, color hair and other related barber or beauty care services.
- Ability to train people in beauty care or barbering techniques.
- Ability to coordinate work activities in a barber or beauty shop.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to perform lifting, pulling, and squatting actions.
- Knowledgeable of and utilize the principles of Total Quality Management.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of a program of study in cosmetology or barbering from a vocational/technical school and one year of experience as a beautician or barber.
Preference will be given to applicants who have:
- Valid State-Issued Driver’s License.
