Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.

Florida State Hospital (FSH) is a mental health treatment facility owned and operated by the State of Florida and is part of the Department of Children and Families. This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as Pharmacy Technician – F/C.  This position will collaborate with each section within the state facilities and be required to use independent judgement, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail oriented. 

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • The incumbent must spend at least 75 percent of his or her time performing duties which involve contact with patients or inmates in a correctional or forensic facility or institution.  For the positions that are within both Civil and FC only include it if it applies. This position requires lifting, pulling, and squatting.
  • Receives or responsible for verification of amounts of medication received with amounts ordered. Check expiration dates for appropriate dating (not less than one (1) year.
  • Receives requisitions and sends receiving report to Financial Services. Participation in a monitoring program to remove deteriorated pharmaceuticals to a quarantine area.
  • Participation in a monitoring program to remove manufacturer drug recalls.  Perform inventory to ensure accuracy in issue and receipt stock. Is responsible for accurate issues, receipt and level of medication and pharmaceutical supplies.
  • Routinely checks storeroom shelves for outdated drugs and rotates stock to prevent outdating.  Ensures that medication and stock are stored in proper temperature and area. Ensures that refrigerators are working properly to prevent loss of supplies. Responsible for requesting and follow through on repair and/or requesting replacement of equipment.  Responsible for maintaining adequate daily levels of ready to use stock for all areas of the Pharmacy. Including preparation for weekends and holidays.
  • Assists the pharmacist in dispensing medication orders for units as prescribed by physicians.  Labeling of preparations and prescriptions.  The counting, weighing, measuring, and pouring of prescription medication or stock legend drugs and controlled substances, including the filling of an automated medication system. While under the direct supervision of the pharmacist, performance of any other mechanical, technical, or administrative tasks which do not themselves constitute practice of the profession of Pharmacy.  Initiates purchasing requisitions for drug purchase, pharmacy equipment, replacement parts and repair services. Specifies type drug, source, quality, quantity and packaging. Ensures that the lowest price for best quality is paid by consulting with Assistant Director for Dispensing, or Assistant Director of Pharmacy.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position:

  • Knowledge of the standards and terminology used in the practice of pharmacy.
  • Ability to inventory supplies.
  • Ability to maintain records.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data and prepare reports.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work responsibilities.
  • Ability to prepare purchase requisitions.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with the State of Florida Board of Pharmacy.
  • A high school diploma or its equivalent, or completion of a vocational, military or community college pharmacy technician program or licensed practical nursing program and one year of experience as a pharmacy technician, or two years of experience in providing nursing or direct patient care service of a medical nature in a county health department, hospital or institution, clinic, convalescent home or other medical setting.
  • College coursework in pharmacy, nursing or other medical related field can substitute at the rate of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours for the required work experience.
