Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.
Florida State Hospital (FSH) is a mental health treatment facility owned and operated by the State of Florida and is part of the Department of Children and Families. THIS ADVERTISEMENT WILL BE USED TO FILL MULTIPLE VACANCIES ON CIVIL AND FORENSIC UNITS ON ALL SHIFTS.
This is a highly responsible and professional position serving as a Registered Nurse Specialist within Nursing Services. Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:
- The Registered Nurse Supervisor is a high-level professional nurse supervisor position which possesses a broad field of nursing knowledge and the expert ability and responsibility for nursing care of the residents within the unit assigned. This employee serves as an experienced nursing resource to the nurses supervised and unit treatment team/peers.
- Assumes ultimate supervisory responsibility for all nursing service personnel on assigned shift, including:
- serving as immediate supervisor for the registered nurses and senior licensed practical nurses assigned.
- administering appropriate counseling and/or disciplinary action necessary to insure a safe, individualized regimen for the residents assigned and compliance with all nursing assessments, nursing progress notes, Service Implementation Plans and other paperwork required in accordance with all standards/regulations applicable to ward.
- assisting in interviews, selection of nursing service personnel to work in the unit.
- completing quarterly/annual evaluation on nursing expectations/standards on all supervised with completion of paperwork, scoring to supervisor with attachments of improvement plans as needed.
- ensuring nurses supervised have current licensure and required CEU's on file with copies to SRNS.
- completing nursing skills checklist at least yearly or more often as needed with copy to SRNS.
- Supervising and completing yearly evaluations on assigned non-licensed staff performing nursing functions assigned with documentation of any re-training or needs sent to supervisor.
- Assumes ultimate responsibility for all resident care delivered on the shift by assigning nursing personnel, including:
- assessing, evaluating, and follow-up on the delivery of quality resident care according to FSH and CF Operating Policies/Procedures/Guidelines/Playbooks/Manuals.
- reviewing nursing staff documentation regarding resident care to assure timeliness and accuracy.
- completing periodic rounds on wards/pods with assessment, evaluation of quality nursing care.
- monitoring resident care through observation and communication with nurses supervised.
- ensuring adequate supplies and equipment are available for resident care.
- assisting in handling medical/psychiatric emergencies with accurate documentation.
- completing 1 on 1 observation of nurses while administering medication/treatments at least once a year or more often as needed.
- assigning and monitoring medication education groups for specific needs.
- ensuring adequate (at least minimum) nurse staffing is scheduled for the acuity needs of the residents assigned.
- In addition to above, the Registered Nurse Supervisor is responsible for providing and monitoring resident care in the assigned areas including:
- Administering medication in all forms prescribed, venipuncture, IV's, and related procedures pursuant to the Unit Dose Policy.
- Completing all forms related to nursing treatment and care of the resident within the time frames specified.
- Completing skills checklist at least yearly and provide direct supervision of non-licensed staff while performing nursing functions assigned pursuant to Department of Children and Families Operating Procedure 155-5, which includes vital signs, weights, heights, etc.
- Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating resident care on the ward assigned on a daily basis with accurate documentation.
- Assisting the physician/ARNP/PA during resident assessment, treatment, physical examinations, medical/psychiatric/behavioral issues and preparing resident for outside appointments/referrals as needed.
- Reviewing of progress notes, consultations, labs, X-ray, EKG, EEG reports and other related reports with documentation of pertinent care to the resident with follow-up as needed.
- Assisting in filing of nursing related forms/documentation in resident's chart.
- Accepting written, oral and phone orders from physician/ARNP/PA/Dentist, transcribing orders/signs and initiating/carrying out orders as required.
- Completing paperwork requirements for admissions, discharges, transfers for residents assigned to unit.
- Responsible for providing safety and security in all aspects of resident care during a crisis or restrictive procedure, which includes:
- Providing immediate emergency nursing care with prompt triage, notification of physician/ARNP/PA assigned and treatment/ referral to Medical Services Unit, calling 7911 or transferring out per physician's orders with documentation/follow-up. Designating mode of travel to emergency room/off campus treatment appointments or as physician orders.
- Providing medical emergency and emergency pregnancy review/drills on shift assigned.
- Providing immediate intervention to de-escalate a resident to help decrease potential for self-harm or harm to others and potential need for seclusion/restraint process.
- Reading Personal Safety Plans on all residents assigned to be familiar with their personal preferences when they are upset to help de-escalate their behaviors and reduce potential for S/R episodes.
- Documenting all pertinent information during a manual, seclusion/restraint process with proper forms completed within timeframes and follow-up documentation in chart as well as ways to potentially decrease incidents in the future.
- Serving as resource person to other nurses for training or continuing education programs. Participates in attendance to in-house and outside training activities (Train the Trainer, etc.) for updating nurses on skills and knowledge.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 and two years of Registered Nursing experience.
Preference will be given to applicants who have:
- Nursing supervisory experience.
