Program Overview

The Developmental Disabilities Defendant Program operates on the campus of Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee and at Sunland in Marianna under the auspices of The State of Florida Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD). The Developmental Disabilities Defendant Program (DDDP) is dedicated to empowering persons with developmental disabilities charged with a felony crime to:

1.         Acquire the skills and support that will prepare them for success in their future environments.

2.         Acquire the skills needed to become competent to stand trial.

 

Position Summary

Duties and responsibilities of a Senior Licensed Practical Nurse F/C include:

The incumbent assigned to this position is responsible for the professional medical care, health, safety, and well-being of residents ordered by the Court to custody of the Developmental Disabilities Defendant Program which is a 24/7 treatment and training facility.  These duties involve providing practical nursing services to residents under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Specific duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Prepares and documents administration and /or refusals of medications. Performs quality control protocols on medications received from pharmacy against physician orders to ensure accuracy, stamps with medication stamps and completes other required information as appropriate. Timely and accurately completes Medication Administration Records (MAR’S).  Observes for effectiveness and adverse reaction/side effects of prescribed medications and documents accordingly.

Performs direct nursing care functions as ordered/prescribed and in compliance with applicable policies and within scope of practice. Ensures all physician ordered treatments are carried out as prescribed, such as, but not limited to: Medication Administration to include IM, SubQ, intradermal, etc. BP, Pulse, Respirations, Temperatures, Intake and Output Monitoring, Phlebotomy, Wound Care, Radiological Exams Preparation, Application of Salves/Bandages, Collection of Lab Specimens, EKG’S, etc.).

Documents in compliance with professional nursing standards, DDDP policies and procedures and integrated services to provide a base of information to ensure quality resident care and to provide historical data collection.

Evaluates resident complaints and notifies the RNS, ARNP, or physician, as indicated.

Attend staff meetings.

Maintains a clean and organized work environment while ensuring medical equipment and supplies are in working order and stocked appropriately.

Receives nursing report prior to assuming duties and maintains an accurate daily nursing report with information on occurrences during shift and new orders given, which is passed to the relieving nurse before going off duty to maintain continuity of resident care.

Assists in admission, transfer, and discharge procedures of residents.   

Maintains time sheet, ensuring accuracy, and submits timely in accordance with policy and procedure.

Complete all the training required. Maintains MANDT certification as required.

Performs other related duties as required.

 

The Work You Will Do 

DDDP is a forensic facility working with individuals with disabilities in a secure setting.  These individuals have been adjudicated by the courts as incompetent to proceed to trial and have significant behavioral and psychiatric issues.  DDDP provides rehabilitative, vocational, and daily living skills training to the individuals served which allows for a smooth transition back into a non-secure residential or community setting.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensure as a Practical Nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrator Code 210-8.27 and one year of experience in providing practical nursing services.
  • A valid driver’s license.

WORK SCHEDULE

This position is located at a 24-hour facility.  Team members must be agreeable to working a shift schedule; regular, evening, or night. Days Off: Varies.

Employees may be required to work additional days/hours based upon the needs of the facility and those we serve.  This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring facility coverage, activities, holidays, and emergency situations.
