PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL EXAMINATION REQUIRED.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS of this position are the ability to correctly pass medications, good nursing assessment skills, good documentation skills, good communication skills, recognition of medications and their effectiveness, ability to work well with others, ability to ambulate the campus, maintainance of licensure and all required CEUs.  This also includes any and all nursing functions which may or may not be listed above that naturally fall under the purview of a registered nurse and are a requirement for licensure.

 

Provides for physical well being, health and safety of persons served.  Assesses patient and determines extent of assistance needed in hygiene, feeding, etc.  Establishes and monitors standards of hygiene.  Determines monitoring necessary for well being, i.e. weight, vital signs, medication reaction, sleeping, and eating habits.  Arranges for x-rays and lab work as needed.  Encourages proper nutrition.  Within one hour after reporting for duty, makes rounds on all assigned living areas.  Makes regular rounds on all assigned living areas.  Identifies physical symptoms and changes and initiates appropriate nursing intervention.  Visually checks all persons served who are in restraints and/or seclusion.  Checks orders, progress notes, and flow sheets.  Administers or supervises administration of treatments.  Demonstrates understanding of medical asepsis, practices principles of infection control and provides in-service to other health care personnel.  Recognizes hazards to safety and takes appropriate action to remedy the situation.  Remains on assigned living areas.

 

Participates in a comprehensive, multi-discipline, outcome oriented, treatment team approach to patient care.  Evaluates and plans for individual treatment programs.  This includes completing nursing care plan within twenty-four hours following admission assessment and to be reviewed and updated as per policy.  Participates in multi-discipline treatment team in the evaluation and planning of the Service Implementation Plan (SIP) and/or Interdisciplinary Comprehensive Treatment Plan (ICTP).  Provides input into the formulation of the plans.  Encourages patient interactions.

 

Responsible for administration of medication.  Reviews patient response to medication and reports to the physician on a regular schedule.  Assesses individual's need for PRN medication.  Administers prescribed medication and treatment.  Administers all injectable medication as ordered.  Properly documents medication given.  Responsible for ordering, administering, and count of controlled substances.  Assists in providing in-service and reviewing all aspects of medication with staff on an ongoing basis.  Maintains cleanliness of cart/cassettes.  Does not keep extra or outdated medication on the ward.  Checks charts for new orders on a regular schedule.  Transcribes physician orders.  Orders and receives prepackaged unit dose medications from the Pharmacy.

 

Assists in providing for rehabilitation of persons served through health education and training, thereby reducing the length of stay.  Teaches individuals self-assistance skills as needed.  Evaluates effectiveness of methods and revises plans when necessary.  When assigned, conducts and participates in individual/group sessions including medication education groups.  Observes and reports behavior and illnesses of persons served.  Counsels with individuals served on problems relating to health or well being.

 

Ensures optimum customer satisfaction by communicating with others to provide for adequate care of individuals served.  Keeps Nurse Supervisor informed of but not limited to admissions; transfers; physically ill individuals; persons placed in and out of restraints; persons placed in and out of seclusion; unauthorized departures; persons served who receive injuries; rapes; discharges; suicidal and homicidal attempts; and deaths.  Records this information in the Nurses Log Book in the Nursing Office.  Participates in unit meetings, weekly nurse’s meetings, designated hospital and service related meetings.  Communicates with staff regarding unit problems affecting patient care.  Nurses working on weekends, evenings, nights, and holidays will notify the Nurse Supervisor that they are on duty before the previous shift’s nurses go off duty. 

 

Adequately documents the care of persons served.  Completes nursing progress notes as assigned.  Records in progress notes all incidents, medication and treatment, and their effects.  Completes administrative forms as required.

 

Maintains professional accountability by knowing policies, procedures, and standards pertaining to patient care.  Responsible for own growth, development, and refining of knowledge in both the nursing and mental health fields by participation in in-service programs, continuing education, and attendance at nurse’s meetings.  Maintains current registered nurse license.  Arranges with the Nurse Supervisor for mandatory training. 

 

Performs related duties as requested.

 

Ability to effectively convey information.  Service orientation; social perceptiveness; judgment and decision making; reading comprehension; coordination; critical thinking; active listening; problem identification; writing; mathematics; customer and personal service; therapy and counseling; some knowledge of instructional methods; ability to correctly pass medications; ability to work well with others; at least minimal skills in computer soft ware.

 

This occupation requires licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statutes, or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 21O-8.22 or 8.27 and at least one year of professional nursing experience.  A Bachelor's Degree in Nursing may substitute for the required nursing experience.

 

Completion and maintenance of MANDT, CPR-C, Infection Control, OSHA, Sexual Harassment, Diversity, and Abuse training required.  Ability to ambulate distances cross campus.  Intervention with combative persons may be required.  Ability to lift and carry at least 25 pounds.  Pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, and kneeling may be required in the performance of duties.

 

This position may demand more than 40 hours per week and obligate the incumbent to work beyond the normal work schedule, when required.

 

Nursing fields, in a position assigned to and actually working evening or night shift, would begin receiving a temporary shift differential of $3.00 an hour.
