Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.

Florida State Hospital (FSH) is a mental health treatment facility owned and operated by the State of Florida and is part of the Department of Children and Families. This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as a Senior Registered Nurse at the Florida State Hospital. This position will collaborate with each section within the state facilities and be required to use independent judgement, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail oriented. 

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • This position requires lifting, pulling, and squatting. 
  • Duties of this position require the incumbent to be knowledgeable of and utilize the principles of Total Quality Management. Maintains the security/safety of residents according to FSH/Unit Policies.
  • Performs direct nursing care functions as ordered/prescribed and in compliance with applicable policies. 
  • Serves as charge person  in the management of medical/psychiatric emergencies (i.e., oxygen, suction, CPR,
  • Splints, administering IV medicine, etc.) until physician arrives.
  • Supervises, prepares, controls and/or administers medications according to Hospital/Unit Dose Policy and other applicable policies.
  • Writes/composes documents in compliance with professional nursing standards, hospital goals, hospital nursing policies and procedures and other integrated hospital services in order to provide a base of information for current and future use, to ensure quality resident care and participates in appropriate audit/survey process.
  • Ensures assistance to the physician with examination of residents as necessary and notation and communication of orders for diet, laboratory and x-ray studies, medical treatments.
  • Develops, implements and/or monitors residents treatment/care plans.
  • Ensures documentation of care given and notation of progress/lack of progress.
  • Ensures/gives/receives report of incidents, illness, and other pertinent data pertaining to resident care, at beginning and end of shift to ensure continuity of resident care.
  • Participates and ensures subordinate participation in resident activities when appropriate and in accordance with FSH/Unit Policies.
  • Ensures adequate medical equipment is maintained in stock to support the nursing care procedures/activities of the unit; medical supply areas neat, clean and orderly and checking of medical supplies for expiration.
  • Participates as member of multi-disciplinary Service Team in the evaluation, diagnosis and development of the treatment and discharge plan for each resident. 
  • Serves as member of Unit 3 screening committee.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Complies with FSH/Unit  “Double-On” Policies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position:

  • Knowledge of nursing principles, practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
  • Ability to administer prescribed medications.
  • Ability to work with patients having a variety of physical problems.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statutes and in accordance with Rule 64B9, Florida Administrative Code.
  • One year of professional nursing experience.
