This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Drivers Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

  1. three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation;
  2. any 2 convictions of reckless driving in the past 3 years;
  3. a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past 3 years; and
  4. a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past 4 years.

Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed.


POSITION DESCRIPTION: Repair and maintain all operational heating/cooling systems and Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes throughout the District, Responsible for recovering, leak detecting and recycling of refrigerants. Manage and maintain web-based Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) management control system. Required to purchase freon as necessary to maintain District HVAC units.

Maintains the District Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) filter program. Perform quarterly filter change and coil cleaning. Produce and maintain filter change and coil clean log to be delivered quarterly to supervisor.

Maintain and repair 23 commercial ice machines in five different facilities in District Three. Perform required preventive maintenance (cleaning of evaporator plates as well as ice bens, changing of water filters, descaling procedures, etc.).  Add refrigerant where needed, assist in the brazing of new parts required for repairs on ice machines. Protect machines in harsh weather conditions (Freezing temperatures etc.) in an attempt to save Department resources.

Assist electricians in installation and maintenance of motors, generators and related electrical and mechanical equipment including ballast replacements.

Assist other building maintenance trades in routine repair and maintenance of District facilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of required building codes related to Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) installation and repair. Skilled in the installation and maintenance of HVAC equipment, Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes and related accessories. Ability to be trained on the repair and maintenance of the District ice machines. Skilled in refrigerant recover, leak detection and recycling. Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions. Skilled in reading and comprehending architectural blueprints and related specifications. Ability to work independently and plan, organize and coordinate work assignments and communicate effectively.

REQUIRED LICENSURE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION: Licensed for freon purchase, must have certification within 6 months of hire date. For servicing all types of equipment (Universal).
OTHER JOB RELATED REQUIREMENTS: Class “E” driver’s license is required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma or equivalent and 3 years of experience in the maintenance and repair of buildings, plumbing, electrical and mechanical equipment. Vocational/ technical training in mechanical repair in one of the building trades can substitute at the rate of 720 classroom hours for one year of required experience.
