Specific Responsibilities:

This position will be responsible for the supervision of the School Health Program within the Washington County School district schools. This program, established by Florida Statute, provides preventive and emergency health services to public school children in grades K-12.  Services are provided in accordance with a local School Health Services Plan jointly developed by the County Health Department, School District and School Health Advisory Committee and coordination, evaluation and education of the counties school health program.  This position spends the majority of the time engaged in supervisory responsibilities. This includes communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees in addition to planning and directing employees' work. The incumbent has the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline subordinate employees or effectively recommend such action. The incumbent will also be required to develop performance expectations, meet with staff regularly to discuss performance, complete performance reviews, maintain vacation and work schedules, ensuring proper coverage, and complete timesheets. This position will report directly to the Executive Community Health Nursing Director.

Supervision of the school health program and assigned staff to ensure that all segments of school health services are performed in accordance with program descriptions and school health plan, directing, supervision, implementation and maintenance of the goals and objectives of all health services set forth in the school health plan.  Will meet the projected target dates that are established.  Will prepare accurate and timely reports as mandated by the state.  Will complete supervisory training and coach employees to improve performance.  Responsible for assuring CPR and First Aid training for all school health staff and 2 school employees from each public school in Washington County. Will ensure timely and accuracy of data on entering into Florida Shots.  Provides direct supervision to the RN, OPS RNs and Healh Support Aides. Completes performance appraisals according to the rules and regulations.  Ensures schedules for personnel coverage of the school health program.  Ensures quality assurance activities are completed to evaluate effectiveness of school health program.  Acts as liaison between health department, school board and school principals assuring a seamless delivery of school health services.  Works closely with the local school board liaison.

Makes school visits conducting on-site assessments of school clinics and students’ total medical and social needs, then coordinates and refers students to appropriate/available medical and social services within the school and community.  Develops nursing care plans and protocols for students identified with chronic disease problems on physical examination and emergency cards.

Plans workload/workflow to meet deadlines and work objectives, training employees in methods for performing an effective and efficient job, conducting staff meetings and taking disciplinary action as appropriate. 

Communicates with supervisor and subordinates to facilitate a coordinated plan of prevention and education in assisting students to have success academically, physically and emotionally.  Initiates health promotion, prevention, educational programs in the schools in accordance with the goals of the program in collaboration with school staff.  Will oversee RN in preparation and implementation of Health Fair(s).

Participates in staff meetings, staff development and continuing education programs. 

Acts as a liaison between the health community and the school community, facilitation improved communications, a positive approach and more positive outcomes for students.  It will be apparent from lack of complaints and misunderstandings that cohesive network of school and health unit have been achieved.

Serves as primary Information Custodian for Washington CHD as well as School Health. Will be required to work Special Needs Shelter during disaster. Responsible for maintaining confidentiality for serving as a security resource within his or her division and as a member of the security team, creating acceptable protocols for the handling an data flow of information stored in their designated information set, meeting with other information custodians and security coordinator as needed, report security-related issues to the security Coordinator, an assist with the annual security risk assessment.  Responsibilities includes maintaining information in accordance with state and federal statutes, rules, regulation and Department of Health Policies, Protocols and Procedures.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or request by Department of Health.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 - required
  • Current driver’s license – required
  • Supervisory experience - preferred
  • Preference may be given to a Registered Nurse with experience working in a school health clinic.
