The Division of Habitat & Species Conservation is comprised of six Sections and two offices. This position works within the [insert name of Section/Office (Section or Office acronym)] of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Division of Habitat and Species Conservation.  

Minimum qualifications, A high school diploma and 5 years professional experience in a closely related biological field or laboratory program is required. A Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant field can substitute for four of the 5 years of required experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Incumbent must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and leadership skills, be able to work well with team members and interact positively with stakeholders and cooperators. 

Other required knowledge, skills and abilities include: 

• knowledge of principles of ecology and wildlife management
• knowledge of the common and imperiled species of Florida
• knowledge of wildlife and land management practices, such as prescribed burning and mechanical and herbicide use for vegetation control
• ability to work independently and as part of a team
• ability to plan and organize work assignments
• familiar with outdoor recreational activities
• skilled in use of computer software, including Windows and Microsoft Office 
• knowledge of ArcGIS and GPS and its application to land management and surveys
• experience identifying and treating exotic/invasive plants with various herbicides is preferred
• ability to work outdoors under harsh conditions (heat, rain, biting insects, rough terrain, etc.)
• ability to operate four-wheel drive vehicles and ATV’s, 100hp tractors and heavy machinery
• ability to frequently push, pull and/or carry more than 50 pounds

Description of Duties: The FWC’s Northeast Region is seeking a highly motivated candidate to join a team of biologists and technicians at the Salt Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Brevard County, FL. This position serves as a Fisheries & Wildlife Biological Scientist II with a highly productive team of land managers to restore and enhance habitats for the benefit of a variety of species and for the enjoyment of Florida residents and visitors. The position also has responsibilities at Split Oak Forest Wildlife and Environmental Area and Little Big Econ, Charles H. Bronson, and Buck Lake WMAs. The successful candidate will be a key team member responsible for assisting in all aspects of management of the WMA including application of prescribed fire and mechanical and chemical treatments for vegetation control (mowing, roller chopping, herbicide application, etc.). Habitat management is focused on imperiled and locally important species including, but not limited to, scrub jay, gopher tortoise, northern bobwhite, black rail, white-tailed deer, and wild turkey.

Additionally, the position will assist with a variety of wildlife surveys and monitoring for both game and non-game species including scrub jay, gopher tortoise, Bachman’s sparrow, brown-headed nuthatch, bat species, black rail, mourning dove and white-tailed deer. This position assists the Lead Area Biologist in all aspects of running the WMA/WEAs including purchasing, annual reports, data entry, GIS work, and harvest reports. The incumbent will interact with various partner agencies and the public to provide information concerning wildlife and area management, rules and regulations. Occasionally the incumbent will attend regional and divisional meetings as well as various trainings as needed.
