Medical Laboratory Technician III

The Department of Health in Pinellas, currently has a Medical Laboratory Technician position at the Clearwater Health Department.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

  • Performs non-routine lab procedures under general supervision and in accordance with established and standardized procedures.
  • Performs venipuncture’s, urine collection and finger sticks for all clinics and all age groups
  • Performs laboratory tests which will include but not be limited to:  urinalysis, hemoglobin, sickle cell, syphilis serology, wet mount, rapid strep and other serologies.
  • Acts as lead technician by monitoring the quality control of laboratory testing and proficiency testing, assists/supervises with the quality control at centers performing WAIVED testing.
  • Monitors lab licenses for expiration.
  • Performs daily maintenance of equipment. 
  • Prepares specimens for transport.
  • Records and maintains records and results as required by Florida statutes. 
  • Receives and logs in lab slips and counts for statistical and monitoring purposes.
  • Performs Laboratory testing and patient servicing in a Health Department laboratory either alone or in cooperation with another technician or technologist. 
  • Helps coordinate laboratory flow with nursing clinic supervisors and center supervisors. 
  • Enters laboratory results into EHR timely and accurately.
  • Follows & complies with HIPPA guidelines.  
  • Performs duties as described in the Florida Department of Health's Information Security policies, Protocols and Procedures, ensuring client information is secure 100% of the time.
  • Assesses needs and provides support to other clinical areas as needed.
  • Coordinates correct of lab errors as needed.  Serves as a main contact for State and contract labs. 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Qualifications:

  • Skill in the use of laboratory equipment and material
  • Ability to collect, perform and analyze laboratory tests and data
  • Ability to understand and follow technical instructions relating to laboratory testing and analysis
  • Ability to provide quality customer service.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology;
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, utilizing approved DOH abbreviations when documenting in the electronic medical record.
  • Ability to maintain accurate, timely and appropriate medical documentation in electronic medical record.
  • Ability to work with persons of a different race, language, culture, or socioeconomic status. 
  • Ability to perform successful venipuncture in 2 attempts or less.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum

  • Associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technician/technology from an accredited institution
  • Licensed as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Technologist by the State of Florida.  If not currently licensed, willing to obtain and incur all costs of obtaining licensure.
  • Six months expereince performing lab procedures including venipuncture.
  • Experience performing lab proficiency testing
  • Willing to travel to other Health Department sites as needed 
  • At least one year experience using an electronic health record

 

Preferred

  • Familiar with the requirements of CLIA waived lab tests
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
