Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County health department locations are approved sites for student loan repayment assistance with the National Health Service Corps for qualified health care providers.


This is work diagnosing and treating acute, episodic, and chronic illness and helping to prevent diseases and injuries that commonly occur in the general population. The physician’s medical competence, medical judgment and general practice of medicine will be evaluated through an established quality assurance process with ongoing chart review, including peer review. The Medical Director will act as a consultant for department physicians. The physician’s immediate supervisor is functionally responsible for evaluation of all other standards and expectations.



  • Provide comprehensive health care to clients attending Primary Care clinics. 
  • Prescribe medication dosages, routes, and frequencies based on patient characteristics such as age and gender.
  • Order, perform, interpret and/or evaluate the results of diagnostic tests, such as urinalysis, smears, complete blood counts (CBCs), electrocardiograms (EKGs), and radiographs (x-rays) to identify and assess patient's condition.
  • Analyze and interpret patient histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
  • Develop treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care, and professional practice guidelines.
  • Diagnose or treat acute health care problems such as illnesses, infections, or injuries.
  • Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost as legally authorized.
  • Counsel patients about drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with other substances such as food supplements, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, or herbal remedies.
  • Recommend interventions to modify behavior associated with health risks.
  • Educate patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patients' individual circumstances.
  • Prescribe or recommend drugs or other forms of treatment, such as physical therapy, inhalation therapy, or related therapeutic procedures.
  • Provide case management and consultation for staff. 
  • Coordinate patient care activities with involved staff. 
  • Act as supervising physician for physician assistants and certified medical assistants and monitor professional methods and techniques as assigned. Evaluates staff performance through on-site observation, review of records and reports, team meetings and individual conferences.
  • Provide consultation and technical assistance in evaluating the appropriateness of client care as it relates to primary care.
  • Consult with and/or provides technical assistance to public and private entities concerning health care.
  • Instruct on topics such as health education and disease prevention.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities include meetings and peer review.
  • Ensure cooperation and coordination between Clinical Services Division, Disease Control and other divisions regarding clinical issues. 
  • Comply with HEDIS measure, meaningful use standards and selected goals for quality of care.


    Minimum Qualifications: Clear and active license in the state of Florida to practice as a physician


    Other Desirable Qualifications: Current board certification in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine.
