Your Specific Responsibilities:
This position provides nutrition assessment, nutrition education, breastfeeding education and counseling, including high risk care plans, when appropriate to clients enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). This position requires independent judgement based on information found in the DHM 150-24 Policy and Procedure Manual for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC,) FL-WiSE Clinic Manual, and WiSE Notes.
Certifies and recertifies clients for the WIC program including nutrition assessment and assignment of nutrition risk factors based upon procedures found in DHM 150-24 Policy and Procedure Manual. Prescribes and makes changes in the WIC food packages for clients.
Provides high risk nutrition care plans for clients enrolled in the WIC Program.
Documents high risk nutrition care plan in the FL-WiSE system using the SOAP (Subjective, Objectives, Assessment and Plan) method. Provides close follow up to high-risk nutrition clients ensuring the required number of high-risk contacts are met.
Conducts monthly education in-services for Nutrition Educators and CPA staff at the Clermont WIC office.
Conducts quarterly training of the Nutrition Education Kit for staff at the Clermont WIC office.
Collects and evaluates information from WIC records, which can be used for quality improvement purposes. Ensures quality assurance record reviews include records from the Competent Professional Authority (CPA) at the Clermont WIC office.
Makes referrals to other provider agencies in an appropriate manner. Maintains records and reports, such as the Employee Activity Report (EARs), travel and timesheets in an accurate and timely manner. Attends and participates in staff development training and required in-service training sessions, as well as regularly scheduled Florida Department of Health in Lake County staff meetings.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the current science and practice of food and nutrition, dietetics or food service. Knowledge of normal nutrition principles and food needs throughout the lifecycle. Knowledge of meal planning, food budgeting and purchasing. Ability to provide nutrition education to others in groups or individual instruction. Ability to determine nutritional needs and develop nutrition education plans for individuals who are high risk. Ability to educate individuals and families about food and nutritional needs. Ability to participate in education or in-service training programs through teaching classes. Ability to plan organize an coordinate work assignments. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Knowledge of Microsoft Office computer software. Bilingual English and Spanish language is preferred.
Qualifications:
Minimum –
- Willing to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. This may include working in a special needs or Red Cross shelter, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural
- Willing to travel to different WIC sites in Lake County
- Have a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited college or university in nutrition science, community nutrition, clinical nutrition, dietetics, or public health nutrition. An official transcript is needed to confirm your qualifications for this position
Preferred –
- Experience performing Nutrition Educator duties in a health care setting
- Experience certifying or recertifying clients in a WIC program
- Experience providing training to staff or co-workers
- Experience speaking, writing and reading the Spanish language
