This position requires a valid Class B driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Drivers Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

  1. three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation;
  2. any 2 convictions of reckless driving in the past 3 years;
  3. a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past 3 years; and
  4. a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past 4 years

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Supervises employees spending majority of their time communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees, and planning and directing employee’s work. Supervises Department of Correction (DOC) inmate crews, in-house crews, and contract crews performing maintenance activities.

 

Develops work schedule and assigns routine maintenance activities for the DOC crews, in-house crews, and contract crews. Issues daily work assignments to DOC officers and provides them with the appropriate tools, equipment, and materials to complete assignments.

 

Performs field inspections to verify the quantity and quality of work completed. Ensures work is performed in compliance with Standard Indexes and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) policies and procedures. Verifies FDOT, contract, and DOC crew’s production, work time, materials, equipment usage, and locations are reported accurately on crew sheets.

 

Performs work need surveys and plans work based on priorities. Submits planned work schedules to the Unit’s Maintenance Management System’s (MMS) Manager. Coordinates with the MMS Manager to plan resources and unit goals for FDOT, contract, and DOC crews.

 

Performs minor operational maintenance and ensures the proper periodic preventative maintenance schedule is performed in a timely manner and equipment is kept in good working condition by coordinating with the local shop. Ensures FODT, contract, and DOC crews are following procedures for equipment maintenance and inspections.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of department regulations, policies, and procedures relating to highway maintenance operations. Ability to interpret roadway design standards, maintenance rating standards, specifications, and plans. Skill in determining maintenance work priorities and organizing resources to meet deadlines. Ability to inspect completed maintenance projects to ensure quality products; supervise others in the completion of routine maintenance activities. Knowledge of Maintenance Management System (MMS) guidelines and production standards. Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.

 

OTHER JOB RELATED REQUIREMENTS: Other job-related requirements for this position: Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on-call” (24-hour duty) when necessary. While on-duty status, the incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver’s license (CDL). The incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis perform other CMV safety-sensitive functions. Possesses a valid Class “B” CDL with airbrakes is required at the time of hire. Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Advanced Level within one year and maintain it. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Correction inmates. The incumbent must also be trained and maintain training certification from the Department of Corrections to supervise inmates.
