Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a highly responsible Environmental Health Specialist position in the Environmental Health (EH) Section of the Wakulla County Health Department. Work is performed in the regional area under supervision of the Environmental Health Manager. Requires technical knowledge in a variety of programs, including but not limited to; Swimming Pool, Limited-Use Well Water, Mobile Home/RV Park, Mosquito, Sanitary Nuisance, Rabies, Tanning, Body Piercing, Tattoo, and Biomedical Waste. Coordinates completion of inspections, produces technical reports, initiates enforcement proceedings and participates in community and interagency meetings as required. Assists in overseeing all water programs. Travel is required for inspections in Wakulla, Jefferson, Madison and Taylor Counties. The incumbent uses knowledge of quality improvement (QI) methods and processes to work with other staff to help identify opportunities for improvement and develop a culture of quality within DOH Wakulla; assists in improvement projects, as assigned.
- Responsible for the inspection and regulation of Aerobic Treatment Unit (ATU) septic systems, tattoo, tanning, biomedical waste, body piercing, and mobile home/RV park facilities. Investigates rabies and sanitary nuisance complaints with follow-up in a timely manner. Reviews applications for completion and compliance. Assists in the preparation of reports, mailing correspondence, legal notices, and/or enforcement proceedings. Informs any concerns to Environmental Manager for guidance and follow-up.
- Responsible for the inspection and regulation of the Limited-Use Well water, multi-family water and private water systems. Collects beach water sampling, inspects and regulates public swimming pools and other natural bathing areas.
- Responsible for maintaining records for all programs in the EH database and organization of in-house files. Reviews applications for completion and assists with enforcing compliance guidelines. Completes required trainings, conference calls and general office duties, including answering phone calls and assisting clients with questions pertaining to the programs regulated by the DOH Environmental Health section. Assists with the preparation of reports, legal notices, and/or enforcement proceedings.
- Assists with mosquito spraying and/or larvaeciding during peak season when needed, which may require working late evenings or early mornings for spraying on occasion. Collects and inputs demographic data for mosquito service requests.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Required knowledge of State and Federal regulations pertaining to Environmental Health Programs.
- Knowledge of Chapter 381 Florida Statutes and associated regulations; Knowledge of terminology, principles of analytical techniques, physical and natural sciences.
- Ability to multitask, maintain records, organize and manage time effectively; Ability to collect, evaluate, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical data; Ability and willingness to physically work outdoors in extreme environmental conditions; Ability to lift 30lbs.
- Skilled in problem solving, planning, writing reports and organization; Skilled in communication with co-workers and the public in a professional manner; Skilled in the use of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to perform duties such as preparing and spreadsheets.
Qualifications:
Minimum - Valid Florida Driver's License, Ability to lift up to 30 lbs, Ability to work outdoors in extreme environmental conditions
Preferred - Degree in Public Health or Natural Sciences, 1-3 years of experience inspecting and regulating public health/environmental facilities, 1-3 years of experience collecting applications and documentation from the public for permitting processes
