Your Specific Responsibilities:

Peer counselors provide basic breastfeeding information and support to mothers for the Department of Health in Pasco County WIC Program; they are available after hours (until 9 p.m.).  Peer Counselors cannot be responsible for distributing/cleaning/inventory of breast pumps. Peer Counselors must stay within their scope of practice and cannot give medical advice.

Provides basic breastfeeding information and support to mothers through telephone contacts, group and individual support and classes.  Maintains and updates client files and provides follow-up service on all referrals received with proper documentation.  Assist and support the agency’s breastfeeding initiatives and projects.

Must complete the WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum Levels 1 and 2. Attends breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor.

Attends regular in-service trainings.

Attends mandatory WIC Program and Health Department meetings and attends conferences and workshops as assigned.

 Travels to other clinic sites to provide coverage for BF services to  WIC participants when other Peer Counselors are out of office or as required per supervisor.

Assists all clinics with Breastfeeding Call Back Lists and Prenatal calls. Responsible for checking in to ensure the lists are being taken care of and stepping in where needed.

Provides materials to individuals and/or families about WIC Services and Breastfeeding classes. 

Completes forms and paperwork in hard copy and electronically as required. Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC clients.

Assists in the maintenance of tracking systems of WIC participants and breastfeeding data. Records and reports accurate data on all client contacts to Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator. 

Performs other related duties as requested/required.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic and able to perform arithmetical calculations.  
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.  
  • Ability to maintain records, organize and coordinate work assignments, communicate, maintain effective working relations and good rapport.
  • Ability to review data for accuracy and completeness.  
  • Ability to follow instructions

 

Qualifications:

Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds. Travels to other clinic sites to provide services to  WIC participants as needed. 

Certification of Acknowledgement- This position complies with and monitors compliance (when applicable) of the mandatory requirements in Section 215.422, Florida Statutes, and Chapter 69I-24, Florida Administrative Code.
