Your Specific Responsibilities:
A WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.
-Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers in office and/or by telephone
-Is available outside the WIC clinic and the usual 8 to 5 working schedules to new mothers who are having breastfeeding problems
-Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including telling
them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers and getting a
good start with breastfeeding. She also helps mothers prevent and handle common
breastfeeding concerns
-Attends and assists with prenatal classes and breastfeeding support groups
-Attends monthly staff meeting and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as
appropriate
-Inputs time sheet and EAR entry within the required time frame
-Subject to emergency shelter duty in the event of a disaster
-Completion of all mandatory or assigned trainings within the required time frame
-May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special
projects and duties as assigned
-Respects each mother by keeping her information strictly confidential
-Keep accurate records of all contacts made with WIC mothers
-Refers mothers, according to clinic-established protocols, to:
-WIC nutritionist or breastfeeding coordinator
-Lactation Consultant
-Mother's physician or nurse
-Public health programs in the community
-Social service agencies
Training:
Attends a series of breastfeeding classes
Observes other peer counselors or breastfeeding experts helping mothers breastfeed
Reads assigned books or materials about breastfeeding
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of basic computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office applications.
Knowledge of basic medical terminology. Knowledge of data entry and/or documentation practices.
Ability to maintain records, organize, and coordinate work assignments, communicate, maintain effective working relationships and good rapport with co-workers and clients.
Ability to review data for accuracy and completeness. Ability to follow instructions.
Qualifications:
Minimum -
Must have knowledge of basic computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office applications.
Must have knowledge of basic medical terminology. Knowledge of data entry and/or documentation practices.
Must have ability to maintain records, organize, and coordinate work assignments, communicate, maintain effective working relationships and good rapport with co-workers and clients.
Must have ability to review data for accuracy and completeness. Ability to follow instructions.
Must be willing to accept this salary if offered the position
Must have breastfed at least one baby for a minimum of six months
Must be currently breastfeeding, or have you breastfed a baby within the past three years
Must have a minimum of a High School Diploma or GED
Preferred -
Has reliable transportation
Has the ability to organize thoughts and present accurate information
Has the ability to document and keep accurate records
Able to present a positive image for the WIC program
