Job Description:
This position will work in the Division of Blind Services, Braille & Talking Book Library located in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Bureau of Braille & Talking Book Library is seeking a physically strong individual for the position of Senior Clerk. This position will be assigned to the Library’s Circulation Services Section and will work with a team of others in the daily process of shipping and receiving materials and equipment to and from customers. The Library is unique as it provides materials to Floridians across the state that are visually and physically impaired and cannot see or hold a regular book. The Library provides the books (in both audio & braille formats) and supplies the equipment needed to enjoy them. The successful candidate will need to possess a High School Diploma or GED, have basic computer knowledge, and have the ability to stand, sit, walk, lift, and bend with ease. The Senior Clerk will be highly mobile in the performance of their work and will be required to learn a variety of skills to be successful. Prior knowledge of basic computer operations is strongly desired, as is a positive record of working well with others.
Examples of Work:
- Assist Circulation Department Supervisor and colleagues with managing the shipping and receiving of daily Library materials from patrons throughout the State of Florida.
- Work with colleagues daily to sort, inspect, and shelve returned Library materials.
- Assist staff with the management and matching of digital books and containers that are mismatched or have become separated in transit.
- Work with colleagues to update material inventories, and manage extra library materials for the distribution to other network libraries and/or recycle.
- Assist Circulation Department Supervisor with inventory and management of National Library Service (NLS) issued equipment including the circulation and routine maintenance of the equipment as recommended by NLS guidelines.
- Develop a working knowledge of the equipment used by the department. Train and coach staff as needed in their use.
- Develop a general knowledge of the Keystone Library Automation System (KLAS).
- Assist to keep all work areas clean, free of clutter and in compliance with all safety guidelines.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- The employee will be required to walk, stand, bend as well as be able to lift a maximum of 40 pounds.
- Ability to safely operate a pallet jack and scissor lift.
- Ability to thoroughly learn the procedures for managing the Library’s inventory of digital talking book machines.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Two years of secretarial or clerical work experience.
- A high school diploma or its equivalent can substitute for one year of the required work experience.
