The Work You Will Do:

DOT Internship – D5 – Fall 2026 Semester / August to December

As a communications intern at FDOT District 5, you will gain hands-on experience driving public outreach and strategic communications across diverse communities.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Focus will be on several key areas including: understanding and application of rules and regulations including: Florida Sunshine Law; Governor’s Plain Language Initiative; Chapter 11 of the PD&E Manual; customer service and communicating with internal and external customers.  Hands-on experience will include: development of project-specific collateral materials; media training; public meeting/hearing and special event coordination and participation; website audits and updates; development of Community Awareness Plans; development of content for our District Newsletter (content and layout); and working with the diverse communities in District Five.

The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

• Basic knowledge of communications principles.

Skills in:

• Use of a personal computer (PC) and Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Organization, time management, and task prioritization.

Ability to:

• Understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States and provide identification supporting citizenship or authority to work for the duration of program participation. 
• Participants are required to comply with all statutes and rules and the Department’s policies, procedures, regulations, and Code of Ethics.

Preferred Qualifications:

• We are looking for a highly motivated team member that is a college level student (junior, senior, graduate levels) and desires to work on a dynamic team and with other departments within FDOT District 5.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: You will be required to provide your Social Security Number to conduct required verifications. Male applicants born on or after October 1, 1962, will not be eligible for hire or promotion in the Career Service, or appointment in the Selected Exempt Service (SES) or Senior Management Service (SMS), unless they are registered with the Selective Service System (SSS) before their 26th birthday, or have a Letter of Registration Exemption from the SSS.
