Survey Crew Chief / District Five / District Design / Surveying and Mapping Office
This position will Supervise survey crew members in the completion of various surveys and ensure that each crew member performs their required duties in a safe and efficient manner.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
Performs all field surveys in accordance with the Survey handbook, Minimum Technical Standards (MTS) required in Chapter 5J-17, Florida Administrative Code, pursuant to Chapter 472.027, Florida Statutes and ensures that each crew member performs the required duties in a safe and efficient manner. Supervises the survey crew technicians in the completion of topographic surveys, Right of Way surveys, miscellaneous surveys, horizontal and vertical control surveys, including centerline retracement, digital terrain models, cross-sections and profiles, underground utilities, drainage and storm sewer surveys, bridge data, water retention areas, retracement of boundary lines, section lines and subdivision lines and right of way parcel staking for appraisal and eminent domain. Submits final deliverables (field notes, electronic field book files, Global Positioning System (GPS) files, station reports, etc.) upon completion of quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) of the survey products and notifies the Party Chief when the assignment is complete.
Identifies, obtains and interprets all surveying and mapping material which is pertinent to the assiged tasks including electronic survey data, right of way maps, construction plans, acquisition deeds, subdivision plats, and field notes or surveys prepared by others.
Trains each crew member in the proper use and care of all applicable survey instruments and equipment, safe work practices, field calculations, note keeping and proper methods of collecting and delivering survey data.
Assists the Party Chief with project status reports, project schedules and project correspondence. Performs the Party Chief’s duties in his or her absence.
Prepares periodic evaluations in the Employee Performance System (EPS); approves employee time records; approves leave requests; assures completion of Individual Training Plans for subordinates and assures prompt, accurate completion of accident / incident reports.
Oversees the safe operation of motor vehicles. Submits work orders and delivers vehicles for repairs and maintenance; reports on the status and condition of survey vehicles, computers and survey equipment; confirms and documents the proper adjustment and calibration of surveying equipment.
The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- survey concepts, measurements, principles and terminology
- electronic surveying techniques
Skills in:
- performing survey calculations for all phases of right of way and design surveys
- utilizing electronic survey instruments and computers
Ability to:
- supervise people
- understand and interpret Florida Department of Transportation policies, procedures and manuals
- plan, organize and coordinate work assignments
- communicate both verbally and in writing
- maintain effective working relationships with others
- lift 50 pounds
- work outdoors for extended periods of time and in rough terrain
Other Job-Related Requirements:
- Due to the nature of this position, incumbent must respond to emergencies. Valid Class "E" driver's license is required. Obtains and maintains certification in Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) - Intermediate Level.
This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:
- three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;
- any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;
- a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and
- a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.
Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed.
